2008-01-16 02:23:00 | Well you know plenty of techs.:p Good ones (or one) too. I'm inclined to tell her to ditch the damned thing. 2 1/2 hours to run Spybot and 2 hours to run Spyware Doctor. The cpu is running at only 6 - 14% with no applications open but it is very slow to open anything.

2008-01-16 02:38:00 | I assume it runs XP. Open task manager and under Physical Memory (K) look at Available - this tells you how much memory is not in use (ie free). If this figure is below about 65500, add more memory. Get at least 512 or 1024 in there to see if it speeds things up. Use DDR266 or DDR333 RAM. As for the over heating, it is by design - this is a cheap lappie that draws heat over the CPU when drawing it out. A VERY bad design if you ask me! Also, how many processes are running when it's idling (according to task mgr)?

2008-01-16 20:41:00 | Thanks for the help everyone . I've run the scans as Wainuitech suggested which took ages . At one point Windows advised file page was too low . I checked, it is at at minimum 386 and max 768 which seems correct . The RAM in the pc is 256 so I didn't mess with it . Processes - 38, CPU all over the place offline and no applications open . Now doing a virus scan but its just overheated again despite being propped up!! I've disabled a few service from Black Vipers list but haven't gone through everything yet . Frankly I think there isn't enough RAM but it was supposed to be upgraded in June last year . No-one can find the invoice!

2008-01-16 20:48:00 | Well 256MB is definitely the prob with 38 processes running! | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2008-01-16 21:07:00 | The RAM in the pc is 256 so I didn't mess with it. Not enough. Minimum 512.... Also how full is the drive?

2008-01-16 21:39:00 | Not enough. Minimum 512.... Also how full is the drive? Plenty of room on drive. 90GB, 59GB free. What I'm trying to find out is why the RAM isn't 512 because it was taken to techs whom I trust in June last year and that is supposed to be what they did.

2008-01-16 22:16:00 | Couple of reasons it may not be showing as 512 - take the cover off the laptop where the RAM is located and make sure it does actually have 512 installed. Another reason could be the RAM if installed was not compatible and has never actually worked ? If you right Click on "My Computer" / Properties ( general Tab) - what does it show there as amount of installed RAM

2008-01-17 00:22:00 | Thanks Wainui, I've checked a couple of times through System and it says 256. I'll either crack it open or take it to the techs and they can do a quick squiz. They always check RAM is installed before releasing a job but Murphy's Law still reigns...... | Winston001 (3612) | |
2008-01-17 22:09:00 | OK, thanks everyone. I took a cover off yesterday and it appeared to only have 256RAM installed - there was an empty socket. I took it to the techs this morning who looked and think maybe the RAM arrived but wasn't installed before it was given back to the owner. Anyway they found some and fixed it. All good.
