2008-01-18 01:11:00 | I'd be doing a chkdsk /r and a hard drive diagnostic, and checking for viruses/spyware. Do you have an up to date anti virus software installed? Open up a command prompt (start/run, type in "cmd") Type in chkdsk /r and hit enter. PC will reboot, and run the chkdsk on startup. Find out the brand of your hard drive, look in the BIOS or pull it out of the lappy. If you give me the serial number I can tell you the brand. Download the ultimate boot cd (www.ultimatebootcd.com), and burn the .iso to a cd, boot off the cd and run the hard drive tool for your brand of hard drive,

2008-01-18 01:22:00 | Hmm, new hard drive shouldn't be an issue, but might pay to check anyway? Up to you. Did you see the question about anti virus software above? Also, in the run box, type sfc /scannow (copy and paste that in to the run box and press enter) That will check the protected system files are in good order.

2008-01-18 01:29:00 | Look in event viewer for the error under system or application. And see what the event ID is, then click on the link it gives you. See if anything comes up

2008-01-18 01:33:00 | Cool...good luck, As Speedy said have a look in the event logs and see if there's any errors there. Another thing to try after the stuff you've got to do already, :p open msconfig, (start, run) go to the startup tab and disable everything, go to the services tab, hide the microsoft services and disable everything there again. See if that error still comes up when you reboot, that will track down if it's a 'windows' (or hardware) error, of if an item of software thats installed is causing it. You can just jump back in there are re-enable everything once you've figured out if thats the problem or not.

2008-01-18 01:34:00 | Will check the event viewer after the hdd test. Thanks

2008-01-18 01:46:00 | Some sites say that error may mean a corrupted file, some say use a registry cleaner (use something like ccleaner's registry option). Delete whatever comes up. See if that fixes it. And not a good idea disabling services thru msconfig. Disable it in services. IF you know what you're doing and disabling.

2008-01-18 01:58:00 | Thanks again, sfc /scannow -- already did that - no change The chkdsk /r just now finished starting the Seagate hdd diagnostics. The will follow up on the other recommendations. Cheers
