631527 2008-01-18 21:35:00 Hi there, im building a new computer (my first build) and am confused on what motherboard to get.

I will be using a AMD Athlon 64 Socket AM2 dual core 3GHz, Inno3D 8600GT 1GB Video Card (nVidia), WinFast TV2000, and 2 2gb ram cards (2GB DDR2-800 PC2-6400) also will be needing 5.1 sound either from the motherboard or from Creative SoundBlaster (pci card, so another pci slot).

so thats what im using, so what motherboard will i be needing, i know a Socket AM2 connection but the other parts of it, integrated graphics?? everything else.

Your help will be much appreciated!! :)

631529 2008-01-18 21:39:00 Whats your budget?

I suggest you get a ASUS or Gigabyte motherboard. Theres a lot to chose from depending on the features you want and budget.

631530 2008-01-18 21:44:00 $1200 all up, less the case and motherboard (inc. CHIMEI 19 INCH LCD
AMD Athlon 64 dual core 3GHz
Western Digital 500GB 7200rpm SATA
Inno3D 8600GT 1GB Video Card
2X2GB DDR2-800 PC2-6400
WinFast TV2000
Creative SoundBlaster) its $1000 so $200ish for the case and mother

631531 2008-01-18 21:56:00 What?
$200 for the case and the motherboard?

In otherwords you want to spend $100 for the case and $100 for the motherboard?

631532 2008-01-18 22:01:00 Given your gear above .. you may be wanting to spend least $200-250 on the motherboard alone.

I suggest go to ascent.co.nz or pp.co.nz, I think PP has the motherboards grouped into the CPU socket types .. so you can have a look at them .. and maybe look at the ASUS and Gigabyte brands.

I have not done it much .. but for the motherboard, you probably be looking at the FSB speeds, how many PCI slots it has or any other stuff that you may want like firewire etc, SATA channels and the chipset version.

Haven't done for a while but for chipset, you may want to avoid the cheaper SiS and ViA and stuff like that given, you are getting pretty good stuff from your list. However they are fine for the typical family computer who are not into as you are .. my bro has them.. whole unit cost like under $500 (no monitor or keyboard/mouse) but all he use is just net, and email and MS Word. For the AMD I think the good chipset is maybe nForce - I assume they are still good but maybe get one of the newer versions or the 2nd. For Intel CPUs naturally thats Intel chipset ..

631533 2008-01-18 22:31:00 well i now have some more cash for it so i will probably go for the higher standard motherboard. yea, that was on the scrimping side a bit. Tuneznz (13203)

Really? 1 Gig? For less than 1200? I don't believe it... If it's true I'll have one thanks!

631536 2008-01-18 22:44:00 Actually... I stand corrected. But why is it so cheap? It has to be rubbish... doesn't it? Thebananamonkey (7741)
