2008-01-31 21:17:00 | Thats a good question. I've never tried it on a USB stick. If you mean a USB flash drive, is it a U3 one?? If it is, you could install a trial version of Avast on it, which is U3 compatible.

2008-01-31 23:06:00 | Does Ctrl+Shift+Esc bring the task manager up? If that doesn't either, then try this. (In Safe mode) Open reg editor : Start/run - regedit Browse to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\system In the right pane, look for the value: DisableTaskMgr Right click DisableTaskMgr and select Delete. (When prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete this value", select Yes. Now browse to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\system In the right pane, look for the value: DisableTaskMgr Right click DisableTaskMgr and select Delete. (When prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete this value", select Yes. Exit regedit That may bring task manager back hopefully

2008-01-31 23:26:00 | good ideas Bev . Alas I have no "start" in the task bar . :waughh:  You have put ideas into my head about finding a workaround ( not sure what they will be . . me brain is not saying "Nooooo" though:badpc: ) I've been going over everything (inbetween other jobs) this morning . . . I'm still pretty sure the registry is badly corrupt :annoyed: Lesson learnt: will now say to broken pc owners "it s totally fecked till I fix it . . the trojan is deep set and urgently inclined to transfer the sum of all your bank accounts to mine if you turn the pc on when I am not about" . . instead of "we aint got time to fix this now, bring the machine over on such a such a day" . . . Any other ideas on getting task manager and the START button and/or/ RUN dialogue box back . . or ideas on workarounds . . . . . anyone?

2008-01-31 23:46:00 | Speedy:... Don't think its a "specific U3".. its one of two 1 gig flash drives/"sticks" from DSE that I have had for 18 mths or so.. I have a bootable copy of Xp on one (and various other os tools)the other carries zipped applications like Zonelabs, various A/V's , HJT etc ..basic lite and compact portable fix kit. I'm going to try the bootable Xp usb "stick" later today and see if that gives me any access to the lappie registry via its START and RUN features. The lappie is on the shelf waiting to hear from the owner:rolleyes:

2008-02-01 03:44:00 | Ok sorry rekka, been away for a few hours or would have reply'ed earlier So if you can run a command prompt from system32\cmd.exe, just get that and type regedit or regedit.exe Any one of those should run regedit - if not, then thats been disabled as well START MENU Does pressing Ctrl+Esc or the windows key do anything?

2008-02-01 04:42:00 | If you are still having problems with the task bar and other items, tryTaskbar Repair (www.kellys-korner-xp.com),may help, or the system just may be to far gone to repair. | wainuitech (129) | |
2008-02-01 05:43:00 | Can you do this: Right click on the desktop, select new and then choose shortcut The name and location both are: cmd That will create a shortcut icon on your desktop, double click it and then type in "taskmgr" and that should open the task manager (hopefully) This is just because you don't have start on your taskbar and thus you don't have access to the command prompt.
