631538 2008-01-18 23:28:00 I wouldn't trust that GPU either. Suggest your stick to ASUS, Gigabyte or XFX all of whom produce great cards with good warranties. stormdragon (6013)
631539 2008-01-18 23:29:00 www.inno3d.com is a similar product Tuneznz (13203)
631540 2008-01-18 23:57:00 ok, what are the benifits of the asus and gigabite over the other one? Tuneznz (13203)

Quality / reputation. It's best to stick with well-known, established brands so you'll know you'd get good support and your hardware would less likely fail. Don't go with some obscure brand that you've never heard about before. In time they'll prove themselves or not.

In the case of motherboards, I myself have an Asus M2N SLI-Deluxe - which has an AM2 socket (for Athlon 64s), SATA (and 1 IDE channel) and PCI-e 16 graphics slots. Okay, my first one was faulty, but the replacement works fine.
Soltek is another good brand, though I haven't seen any AM2 socket versions. It pays to look at the design & layout as well, i.e. PCI slot spacing w.r.t. PCIe-16 graphics slots, power connectors, IDE / FDD / SATA connectors being in reasonably close proximity to where the drives will be installed in the case.

For graphics cards, Leadtek is another good brand with reasonably quiet heatsink/fan design. Asus has a similar design for their cards, e.g. EN8600GT.

631543 2008-01-19 02:28:00 Don't mean to hijack the thread... but you reminded me. Are soltek still in business? Because I've been trying to update my BIOS, and their download site is showing a mysql_connect error. Don't want to pay for BIOS, as some sites have asked me to. Looking for a revision where I can change FSB speeds, as the current one is locked, apart from voltage and CPU multipliers. Thebananamonkey (7741)
631544 2008-01-19 10:08:00 Thanks for the help and advice,am i in right direction with a Gigabyte GA-M52S-S3P nVidia nForce430 Socket AM2 ATX Motherboard (www.pp.co.nz) and a Gigabyte GeForce 8600GT 512MB GDDR2 HDTV gpu? Tuneznz (13203)
631545 2008-01-20 00:48:00 512 and 1gb of memory for 8600GT cards is complete overkill the GPU itself simply isn't fast enough to utilize all the memory. Often with the cheap 512mb and 1gb cards they have slower memory speeds as a compromise thus meaning they often preform slower than 256mb cards. If you were buying a 8800GT then a 512mb card would be a good purchase.

AMD really is a waste of money at the moment and you making a big mistake buying a high end CPU and then skimping on the rest of your component. The same can be said for wasting money on Soundblaster, onboard sound is pretty good these days and even if its not up to your standard you better off investing money on quality components now and upgrading the sound later.

Overall your selection of components isn't that great.

631546 2008-01-20 09:58:00 i have had a large look at many sites and pieces of info and have found the best one for what i need and then just price spyed it and found it much cheaper elsewhere. true i have chosen a motherboard (now) that has the 5.1 and such built in to it so i dont need to splash out on that. the GPU is at the moderate side of the price range and quality (for a mid range gaming and light video editing computer).

Why is AMD crappy atm? i still see them as being above Intel
