2008-01-19 23:03:00 | Hi - My computer technician has said that increasing the 1GB of RAM I am running on my desktop (OS XP Home) wont improve the performance. Is this the general view please?

Generally...rules are that the more RAM..the less you need swapfile areas and the speed is seemingly increased for some of those massive calls to the RAM sticks. The real limits seem the be with the MOBO designs..and some can max out at 512, while others can run all you can get in the expansion slots. |

2008-01-19 23:55:00 | Hi - My computer technician has said that increasing the 1GB of RAM I am running on my desktop (OS XP Home) wont improve the performance. Is this the general view please? The tech may be correct. The maximum RAM under XP Home is around 3 Gig. This if the Motherboard and BIOS support this anyway. What motherboard do you have? What are you using the desktop for?

2008-01-20 05:53:00 | Oh dear, I have run and printed Belarc Advisor.... main circuit board (presume motherboard?) says MSI Amethyst-M 1.0. Bios: Phoenix Technologies LTD 3.35 09/30/2005. Does this help? What do I use it for... email, machine embroidery (graphics), spreadsheets, Word - general stuff.... but I like speed and would like to upgrade if it will speed up performance... TIA Bryden

2008-01-20 06:25:00 | If you like, I have a (US-based) site that can scan your system and tell you exactly what you have and what you can put in for max performance. Some people are afraid of these scanners, but they are interested in selling hardware, and I have NEVER had nor have I ever HEARD of anyone having trouble with it..spyware-wise or trojan-wise. HERE: www.crucial.com I use it on every repair and rebuild I do and have never had a problem.

2008-01-20 14:17:00 | Thanks for that link... seems that the performance would benefit from additional RAM mmmmmm.......remember, these people, cruical are SELLING ram....take a look at the pic i've uploaded.......my system runs 1.5gb currently with a few firefox pages open and a few apps, (firewall/av/messenger x2/asus probe/scotty the watchdog) running it shows i've got over 1gb free.....sooo......according to THEIR scan my system performance would improve ?......yeh sure......I aint gonna spend almost $200US to get some debatable performance improvement .....the VERY FEW TIMES i've ever used most or all of my ram .....well the ONLY times i've used most/all of my ram is when I have had multiple virtual pc's running at the same time....... www.imagef1.net.nz Your call I guess.........
