632801 2008-01-22 07:10:00 I recently lost any display on my monitor and after trying out the graphics card, on-board graphics, dusting and reseting the CMOS battery went to local PC store. They have put in a new motherboard - an ASUS K8V-VM. Unfortunately the previous graphics card does not fit the new motherboard, so until I decide on whether to get a new graphics care I am relying on on-board graphics, which should not be too bad because the new motherboard has "integrated graphics".

All seemed well until 24 hours later we noticed that there is no sound. Probably something simple we have to do but looking around and spending quite some time we do not know what it is. Checking the Control Panel and the icon for "Sounds and Audio devices" everything is greyed out.

The only connection we have from the monitor to the PC is the ten point blue lead. We even tried the light green single plug to the PC. Did not work and this plug seems to be there to connect to other devices - such as a Blackberry or iPod.

We have marvellous little Ozaki speakers (recommended by the good Lord Metla ! ). These are connected via the darker green single plug from the PC to the speaker set.

I feel that there should be one more connection somewhere --- but cannot see where ! :illogical

632802 2008-01-22 07:49:00 Hi Misty - sounds like ( no pun intended):p that the audio drivers may have dropped or not been loaded. If you right click on "My Computer" / Properties/Hardware Tab/ Device Manager - they should show as not being loaded, either by a ? or !

Checking the Control Panel and the icon for "Sounds and Audio devices" everything is greyed out.

Get the CD that you should have gotten with the new board and reinstall them.

PS: answered your PM as well:thumbs:

632805 2008-01-23 08:10:00 Well, have loaded the CD and selected the driver (from about five or six) called "AMD Cool'n'Quiet". Seemed to load alright but did not work. From the Control Panel still got greyed out audio.

When tried reloading the driver again it asked whether I wanted to uninstall so I guess you cannot uninstall if it has not installed in the first place.

When try to get audio from iTunes as a test the Equaliser comes up. Shift every option on the Equaliser up quite a bit but it does not help.

Perhaps there is a lead that I have not connected ?

Seems that I should take everything back to Advanced Computers and get them to redo properly.

My life seems on hold (again !). Seem to spend lots of time going in circles :(

632806 2008-01-23 09:45:00 Cool and quiet is nothing to do with sound. It is an energy saving feature.
You need to load the sound drivers. You should find what you need to do in the motherboard manual, available on line if the shop did not provide one.
If you are still uncertain, load all the motherboard drivers on offer, there will be up to three re-boots during the process.

632807 2008-01-24 07:21:00 Hi Pentium
I did that and all fixed thanks. Also have just loaded the USB 2 driver so it now likes my iPod.

Am getting a rolling motion on my screen when I scroll. I guess that's because I don't have a graphics card. If I am right then I will definitely have to get one - it will drive me crazy (crazier !). Makes me feel quite ill !!! :groan:

632808 2008-01-24 07:55:00 XP; Try right-clicking on the desktop, select properties>settings tab>advanced button > graphics adapter tab > list all modes button, and adjusting your screen refresh rate (75hz is good on a CRT screen) to fix your flicker when scrolling.

Vista; Right-click desktop, select personalization>display settings>advanced settings>list all modes button and as above.

If you're using your old installation of your operating system on your new motherboard (assuming that is a different model from your original m'board ;) ), this may be causing probs also, would pay to do a repair install of Windows to sort it out.

632809 2008-01-24 07:56:00 I could be wrong here with out actually looking, but its sounding ( no pun intended from previous problem) that the drivers were never correctly loaded. The screen should not roll even with on board Graphics.

Out of interest, when the new board was installed, did the tech do a complete fresh install, a repair install or just put in the board and hope for the best ?

Did you load all the Mobo Drivers as Pentium suggested as a possible fix ?

632810 2008-01-24 08:22:00 Hi wainuitech
He did a repair of Windows .

I have loaded three of the drivers so far . They are "AMD Cool'n'Quiet", the audio driver and the USB 2 driver . I am slow aren't I . Will load the others soon . I am very aware of what Pentium said and am following through  . The CD does not boot right away - I have to open and shut the CD drawer a number of times before the PC recognises that it is there . However once that happens the loading is reasonably straightforward .

My main thought in posting had been to let Pentium know that I have sound, for which I am very grateful !
