632719 2008-01-22 02:59:00 Hi All
Hey I assembled my new PC. which went well. But any way I got my vista from my flybuys only to realise a bit late it's an upgrade version. Bugger, anyway I said to myself. that's o.k I'll just load up win2k and then ugrade to vista. So I tried that and it almost worked until it said I first need to download service pack 4 for win2k. which is a problem. I don't have any win2k drivers for my new mobo to get it on the net. checked the site and they only go back to xp.

pentium 2.4 core 2 quad, 4gb corsairs ram,p5kr mobo, corsairs 620w.

632720 2008-01-22 03:02:00 Hmm, you can actually upgrade from Win2k to Vista? I didn't know that!

Try the XP drivers, they may work.

If not, probably your best bet is to download it on another PC and burn it to a disk, or get a USB to LAN adaptor.

632721 2008-01-22 03:10:00 According to this you can (www.microsoft.com)

Youre right, the only thing that has 2000 on the ASUS site, are the chipset drivers.

No harm in trying the XP drivers. It'll either work or it wont.

Hmm and some sites say you can install the upgrade of Vista (Well without XP that is).

Try it, and see what happens.

You may not have to install 2000 first. But the CD maybe needed during the install?

632722 2008-01-22 06:46:00 Very interesting to know that you can upgrade from win2k. From the gist of the work on your link speedy, and the other stuff mentioned on this thread, you buy a special vista upgrade cd rather than an actual vista os disk. How much would you save buying this upgrade rather than the full and does the upgrade leave anything out that is on the full edition? nzjab06 (101)
632723 2008-01-22 08:14:00 Normally with an "Upgrade Version" you do not have to physically have the previous version installed. Clean install the Vista and part way through the install it will ask for the qualifying CD/Disk, you put that in and it checks then you return the Vista CD and continue. The Key will be on the Upgrade Version so you use the new Key.

I have done a few Upgrade versions and it has always gone sweet for me.

The qualifier does not even have to be a legal version so long at the Upgrade sees it as a qualifier (Eg borrow someone's CD for the install).

632724 2008-01-22 08:56:00 I went from win 98 to XP via upgrade and it only asked for a valid disc as Bantu has stated..mine was an install disc not a recovery disc, would this make a difference? limepile (96)
632725 2008-01-22 10:14:00 Actually you can upgrade to Vista from a Vista Upgrade. mikebartnz (21)
632726 2008-01-22 19:31:00 Actually you can upgrade to Vista from a Vista Upgrade.

Did that make sense to anyone else? I don't get it...isn't that what a Vista Upgrade is supposed to do? :p

632727 2008-01-22 21:36:00 There is a bug or something intentional in the Vista upgrade install that allows you to "upgrade" from Vista to Vista.

This is from what i read a while back. If you install Vista from the upgrade DVD you end up with a trial version. You can then run the Vista install again from the DVD to "upgrade" it to a full version of Vista. Vista considers itself as a valid OS to upgrade from.

Pretty simple really, just time consuming.

This link (windowssecrets.com) has the steps to install Vista using Vista upgrade - scroll down to "Use Vista's 'upgrade' version to clean-install" for the steps.
