632671 2008-01-21 23:42:00 I seem to remember that PCTech recommended Asus or Liteon brands. I have had a good run out of a Liteon one.

Do you have suggestions as to where I could get one?

There are none locally (that I can find), nor at my usual supplier Ascent (for the moment). Not sure when Ascent will have more supplies.

Thanks for you help, of course!

Cheers

632672 2008-01-21 23:45:00 Asus are the brand to go with.

OCZone are good to deal with.

If you have SATA on your motherboard, get a SATA DVD RW.

Why? It used to be that they were rebadged Pioneer but cheaper.

632675 2008-01-22 00:20:00 So, what if they are rebadged Pioneer burners?

They're reliable.

Actually some of the ASUS burners are around the same price as the Pioneers.

And some are dearer.

632676 2008-01-22 00:25:00 Asus and Pioneer are good brands. Who carers. I never heard of Asus stuff being re-branded. wratterus (105)
632677 2008-01-22 00:27:00 I've had a bad run with Liteon drives recently, really really loud compared to other drives. Their only saving grace is that the supply 3 different coloured face plates although i think other companies are starting to do this too. Pete O'Neil (6584)
632678 2008-01-22 00:30:00 Same here. Not a big fan of LiteOn, I have two at the moment, but don't really like them. wratterus (105)

And Pioneer were the brand to go for ages ago. I just could not afford one at that time.

I have two ASUS DVD writers in my computer and one has Lightscribe.
Neither has given any problem.

The HP Lightscribe I had some time back was returned under warranty and replacement received. Both the original and replacement failed within weeks rather than years.

That's the point . They used to be based on Pioneer so the reliability was similar . That history is meaningless now .

New Asus drives are their own design based on the same chip that Liteon use .
