632454 2008-01-21 06:20:00 Hi everyone!

My computer has starting making weird noises lately, it's louder than usual.

I suspect its the fan, but the first time this happened, we opened the case for our PC and cleaned the dust out, beacuse we thought something might've caught on the fan. After the cleaning, the fan went back to normal noise level.

The second time this happened, was when I got up in the middle of the night for a toilet trip, as we left the PC on overnight, it was making the same weird noise again. We suspect it's something to do with the power box now, but we can't be 100% sure.

Sometimes it stops, and then it starts again for a period of time before it stops again.

If anyone can offer any help on this, I'll be very grateful. The PC sounds as if its sick...

632455 2008-01-21 06:36:00 Probably dust in the fan. Try dismantling the PSU if that's what you think is making the noise, look at the size of the fan and buy a replacement. You can lube it, but that doesn't last long. Basic fans are relatively inexpensive. ($5-$25)

Figure out exactly where the noisy fan is first.

632456 2008-01-21 06:39:00 Welcome to Press F1 Rollexe - A bit more info please.

Would be good if you can describe the sound a bit more - does it sound like something spinning, like a fan, or a buzzing, etc?

This could be the CPU fan, if it has whats called "smart Fan Control". Thats when the fan slows down or stops until the CPU gets hot enough, and the fan restarts.

One way to track it down is with the side off the case, look & listen very carefully as to where it appears to be coming from. When it does it again get down close to the PSU and see if its coming from there.

632457 2008-01-21 06:44:00 The sounds is like a fan spinning, a sort of soft churring noise.
We also think it may be the fan in the Power box, the one at the very bottom of the PC.

The fan on top of the CPU chip is working fine.

Also, could you please explain what you mean by 'lube it'?
If we are to dismantle the Power box, we're concerned that we might break something by accident or do something by mistake, unless it's really easy to do. :o

We don't think its the dust, as we just cleaned ours.

632458 2008-01-21 10:14:00 DONT dismantle the power supply unit (PSU, the 'power box'), unless you're very careful, the large capacitors in there can store a lethal voltage :horrified , easier to buy a new one. If you do replace it, theres lots of plugs you need to remove/replace on the motherboard and drives etc, if you're not confident you can swap it, might pay to take it to a computer tech or shop.
When the others were talking of lubing the fan, if you look at the fan you will see a sticker on the center boss, if you lift this you should see a bearing you can lubricate for a temporary fix, trouble is once its become noisy the bearing is shot.
To make sure which fan is noisy, stop the one/s you can reach, with your finger (wont hurt you) for a moment; or use a piece of garden or similar hose as a stethoscope (hold the open end as close to the fan as you can, the other end in your ear ;))

632459 2008-01-21 19:57:00 I'd start by making sure which fan it is exactly.
And probably the bearings in it are gone.

632460 2008-01-22 08:32:00 It sounds like if it's from the Power Box, but I want to know if we should get it fixed ASAP or it's just the fan getting old.... RollEXE (13311)

If it is the fan in the PSU, then definitely take this into account. I'd rather spend $80 than chance killing myself, or giving myself a big shock. Unless you really know what you're doing, then I'd just leave it well alone. Given that you have to ask (don't worry, I would too) you should probably leave it. :)

632462 2008-01-23 01:37:00 So, it's not a big deal to the PC's general health?
I wouldn't touch the PSU or dismantle it.... I think the risks are too big.

While its spinning and working its mainly a pain from the noise - but remember its cooling components - so if it fails / stops spinning parts over heat - fry- and you have problems.
