1422749 2016-07-07 12:24:00 Got a old 500GB 2.5" Seagate Momentus 5400rpm HDD.

Plugged it in to my PC, all my data showed up. as those data are pretty old and I decided to wipe it clean for my files. Launched Disk Management and deleted the partitions - no problem.

I then re-partitioned and format it but it took quite a while spinning and popped up the error message the formatting failed. Now, the drive is dead completely. Windows doesn't detect it any more. Tried to connect it to different PCs with same results.

Question: Can a HDD just died like this?

Question: Can a HDD just died like this? Yep they sure can. Could be one of several reasons.
One minute appear to be going fine next :yuck: Hence that's why its hounded time after time backup any important data on your computer that you don't want to lose. Drives fail.

Can you hear/feel the drive spinning up when plugged in ?

1422752 2016-07-08 00:15:00 bk T, are you using Win7 to format this drive, I find that Win 7 can behave strangely with unformatted, newly wiped drives, try Win XP. zqwerty (97)
1422753 2016-07-08 00:41:00 At first I used my main PC, Win8.1 to delete and format the HDD but failed in formatting as mentioned above. I then plugged it in to a Win7 machine, and an old XP but both couldn't detect it.

Took out he HDD, plugged it in to the SATA port of the Win7 & Win8.1 machine, no joy. Unfortunately the old XP machine hasn't got a SATA port.

1422754 2016-07-08 02:57:00 long shot - install some partitioning software on W7 or 8.1 See if it will see the HDD.

I personally use AOMEI Partition Assistant, certainly a lot easier. There are others as well.

Or you can try looking in the BIOS, it may see it, if it doesn't then its not good.

1422755 2016-07-08 05:49:00 Honestly, throw it away.

If it's acting out now and you do manage to get it sorted with third party tools or whatever, you will still be looking at failure sooner rather than later. It really isn't worth the risk and hassle, cut your losses.
