Visitors to The Pirate Bay may now be tossing up whether or not to pay to decrypt their files after the torrent site hosted ransomware-barbed ads over the weekend.

According to security firm Malwarebytes, the chief threats behind the attack on Pirate Bay users were the Magnitude exploit kit and a relatively new ransomware subscription service, Cerber.

1419673 2016-04-27 22:01:00 The cynical part of me wonders if the studios are behind this to discourage piracy, at least in some partial way (I don't really think they created or profit from the ransomware itself). Lucky for me I don't visit the pirate bay too often and I never pay attention to any ads that get past adblock+. I've grown to rely on a slightly less popular but better maintained site that I won't be naming here :)

Speaking of, has anyone else noticed a growing number of sites that won't let you in with ad blockers enabled, including the articles here at PC world for anyone who reads those.

1419674 2016-04-27 23:04:00 Yeah - AdBlock et al is a bad thing in the eyes of those who want to monetize their sites and they don't get $ if we block them. SurferJoe46 (51)
1419675 2016-04-29 21:52:00 So viruses are finally acting like they do in Hollywood movies? How amusing. Agent_24 (57)
1419676 2016-04-30 06:53:00 Some sites need/want to make money via online ads, and I bet many of us here have saved a lot of money, gained wealth of info from publishers and e-commerce/auctions content and products (YT vids, forums, ebay). I know I have. i actually click on ads now from sites that I have yielded excellent information that I learnt, or cheap products to buy. I reckon I just saved 150 bucks by learning and buying to upgrade myl HID lights to my car. Thanks: Honda accord forums, Google Images, Some guy's personal blog, 2 Cars Pro, YouTube, and ebay - all which I have taken for granted and relatively free info...

We are getting superb free content via many online avenues to benefit greatly from. So maybe if users block their ads, perhaps rightfully publishers/sites will block you...Ads go with the internet...ask Google or Yahoo or MS Bing...
