1419137 2016-04-14 00:35:00 We're about to go on holiday and I need somewhere to store the videos I take until we get home (I always take 4k)

I thought we would have to take a laptop with us but then I got the idea of off-loading them onto cheap USB sticks. Tried it just now and it works a treat. The Sony Z3 Compact came with an OTG cable (to turn the normally 'device' port into a 'host' port)

I suppose this is what Apple owners do?? and others who don't have an SD slot. The Sony has an SD slot but you need a fairly good SD card to write 4k. I've only got one hi-spec card

1419138 2016-04-14 01:48:00 I have gone back to video after a long absence and bought a Sony 4K camcorder ( FDR-AX33) and am going tu use a 1TB WD USB3 portable HDD for OTG storage when we go away at the end of the year. Haven't tried it yet but will do so before we go.

Glad to hear it works for you. Is it a USB3 stick you are using. USB2 would take forever to transfer if you only record at 4K. I also only use 4K as I have a 4K TV and if any family want a copy I process as 1080i. I got a Panasonic UHS 3, 64GB card for $199 from Hardly Normal and at the time that was a pretty good price. I see they are cheaper now so that might be a better way to do things.

Great stuff this 4K. I am real chuffed with it. I use either a monopod or a tripod for recording as low res video used to look OK with a bit of shake but 4K loves being steady.

1419139 2016-04-14 02:09:00 I tried a USB3 stick on my Sony Tablet using OTG and it did not work. USB2 fine

My guess is they had to do some clever wiring to make USB3 compatible with USB2 and some different clever wiring to make a device port into a host port

and the two kludges are not compatible with each other :(

1419140 2016-04-14 02:24:00 I don't do any of this, but I did buy a couple of flash drives that have a mini USB OTG connection on one end and a regular USB one on the other. I can plug them directly into my Note3 without a cable just by sliding the other end out of the cover. I find it very convenient to copy files back and forth. dugimodo (138)

Yes, I captured our granddaughter's first word on 4K

Mrs Micro said to her "Do you want to give [that dangerous object] to me?"

The girl turned away and said "No" direct to my cellphone! I was a bit far away but 4k came to the rescue

I see that your camera records 4k at 100 Mbps. That's about twice the rate of my cellphone (56 Mbps). You probably need U3. I have a Strontium U1 in my cellphone and it works fine

If you want to correct camera shake, I recommend ReSpeedR. It handles 4k and will do 100Mbps. The free version puts a logo top left and bottom right but still looks good (and often you can expand it to get rid of the logos). I went on to get the paid version which I think was $99 US. You need a good PC

1419142 2016-04-14 07:11:00 It was the Z3 that I own that got me back to video. The 4K video it takes is pretty darned good. Health problems make me not too stable and I had a real problem holding it still and gave up. Then the AX33 came out and I am so excited about it all. The BOSS (Balanced Optical Steady Shot) is unbelievable. Considering I started a long, long time ago with the big camcorder that recorded of full size VHS tapes. I thing technology has done wonders. I will have a look at that ReSpeedR but am happy to use monopod/tripod for best results. Editing with Pinnacle 18. That in itself is also a miracle of tech compared with the early version I used to use. I can edit to quite a few different resolutions from almost RAW for the 4K TV, to 3GP for phones. Marvelous!!!

1419143 2016-04-28 00:57:00 We've just come back from holiday - the OTG cable worked fine to clear 4k video from my phone (offload to USB2 sticks).

I'm thinking that it's not really necessary to have an SD slot on my next phone. But it would have to have 64GB internal storage as 32GB wouldn't be enough after Android and apps take 20GB. That's shooting 4k

I found a big speed difference between the Lexar sticks. The black one took hours to clear 20GB. The white one was at least twice as fast. (Not being able to charge the phone while downloading was a bit of a problem)

I presume the special OTG sticks you can buy have fast memory? They're more expensive and no good for boot. I think I will look out for specials on ordinary USB2 sticks of the white Lexar variety
