1422987 2016-07-13 22:06:00 The right click option still works in windows 10 usually.
Right click - open with - more options - look for another app on this pc - browse to word/excel/whatever

I have changed file associations this way.

Another option might be to use Ccleaners registry repair scanner to remove the old file associations - but of course you should back up first before touching the registry. I admit to using this without backing up a few times and it worked, but it's always a risk.

Once the files have no associated program windows should give you the option to find one when you try to open them.

try that for pdf, or html . Win10 will just change it back again. :)

1422989 2016-07-13 23:10:00 I'll just take your word for it. I've only done it for music and video files and it doesn't change back for them, not sure why it would be different for other file types.

I have office installed but I hardly ever use it, but it's basically free so why not. And in case anyone was going to ask, work has a business license for office that allows 5 devices per user so I'm using it at home on that.

1422990 2016-07-14 00:35:00 there is the 'free' Office 2010 starter, thats still available for download from some websites.
support.office.com

It still works & still installs OK, but its a bugger to get going on Win10 (it is do-able).
The good thing is the adverts no longer work: bonus .

Oh yes I have tried that, Ccleaner, made no difference. Open with does not work, as I have explained, there is absolutely no alternative to open with. Trying to set Default programs to open file types is a complete waste of time, they cannot be changed for some reason. Looking for "another app" is a complete waste of time as well. She already has a genuine copy of MS Office installed. That is the problem, Kingsoft has completely taken over! We have even uninstalled MS Office and reinstalled it. Well that worked, NOT.
I think there is no alternative but to do a complete reinstall of Win 10! She is now of course regretting having installed Kingsoft at all, and Windows 10!

This person is involved with organising events throughout NZ and relies on a completely reliable office program to help her with that. And as I have said, there is a perfectly legit copy of MS Office on her Laptop. Left her yesterday running Malwarebytes on full scan, she is yet to back back to me...

1422992 2016-07-16 12:05:00 WPS Office (or Kingsoft as you call it) shouldn't take over like you mentioned. Most of the time if something has gone wrong like its been mentioned its completely possible something else has caused the file associations to play up. You should be able to change to what ever you want.
The Versions that comes pre installed on some computers is only a trial. The versions I put in (never had any problems with it) is a earlier Beta version (free) and works perfectly fine.

Try running the sfc /scannow command from a admin command prompt window. That may fix any corruptions. Failing that DISM commands (and there's a few) may also fix it, or even a repair Install.

You can also try resetting all the associations Described default-file-type-associations-restore-windows-10 (www.tenforums.com)

Fix it then !!! Theres nothing wrong with W10, and WPS works perfectly on it, and can have MS office as well all working together perfectly fine, I should know I do it daily. If its beyond the knowledge base then hire a tech who knows what they are doing.

I was at a business the other day - the lady was complaining about W10 -- After a bit of conversation found out SHE was the cause of all the problems, not the Actual OS. ;)

1422993 2016-07-16 23:31:00 WT, Your last sentence actually could be very correct in this case! Lol. I will try sfc /scannow when I see her next week though and see what pops up. Many thanks for advice.

1422994 2016-07-16 23:59:00 Like a lot of problems you have to find out where the fault actually is. Sometimes the new Settings options is not exactly 100% stable, ( its greatly improved in the up and coming upgrade).

Soooooo you go back to "old school" :nerd:

NOTE: The following is in Icon Large/Small View.

You can right Click the Start button / Control Panel/ Default Programs / Set your "default Programs", OR "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" once it populates locate word Doc's / Excel Eg: .doc, docx and change to suit.

If that doesn't work, if she can hold out till the next upgrade comes out early August then you can download a ISO do a Upgrade manually and it should fix all the problems. While a repair install can be done now using the latest version of W10, only means it will go through the whole process again early August.

Of course with ANY upgrade /repair make sure all data is backed up first - just in case.
