One of his best . References when he was living at home with an alcoholic abusive father and a dope addict mother . The 'dove' was his mother . Pretty much the whole movie "Purple Rain" was a life story .

Prince BTW, was drug-free for the past dozen years or so - maybe longer since he was a vegan . But he did slide back into pain killers that helped control the pain from when he fell off a stage a while back .

Here's a Hollywood take on it . . . . and believe me, Hollywood didn't really like him much since he was pretty quiet and to himself and out of the scandal sheets and birdcage liners .

1999, a tuneful pop song was the first song of his i heard, around early 80's. The movie purple rain, I found OK, prince's acting perhaps not convincing at times. Interesting to see Clarence Williams III portraying the father and more convincing;perhaps some may remember him from the "Mod Squad".

The movie is to be re-released in several cities in the US...

I wonder though if drugs influence has created popular classic/rock songs, from ex cocaine snorters like Steve Tyler, Mick Fleetwood, and Keith Richards, whom all seem to be prolific song writers/musicians/vocal leads.

1419412 2016-04-23 14:54:00 I think - and this is why I left the professional music scene when I was younger - that the reason drugs play such an important role in music (especially music) --- is the really bad hours that you have to work to be productive .

I played every dive, sleeve-ball honkeytonk and topless/bottomless bar-grill in most of Orange and Los Angeles Counties in California for years .

The hours you work start at --- 8 or 9 in the evening ---- and go until 'way past 'last call' at 2 in the morning . Then you pack up, load out and go home to sleep, but you can't sleep because you're still wound up with all the noise still running through your head .

Food is eaten at biologically wrong times, sleep is wrong because when you finally get calmed down and get to sleep, it's 5 or 6 am, and everybody else in the world is just getting up and starting a productive day . But you're in bed, trying to sleep with the daytime din and noise that your brain wants to be a part of .

Then you awake at 2 or 3 in the afternoon, take care of your instruments, amplifiers, cables, strings, etc . , and have 'breakfast' at 3pm . Then it's a practice, a yelling session at the guys who mucked up a song last nigh -t and you practice to get it right/better/correct and try to add a new song - for a couple of hours .

All this - and more - takes a very big bite out of socializing with normal people with their 9-to-5 gigs, and of course: the family that isn't working with you in the night has their own bodily schedules too .

So drugs come into the act so you can work and not sleep --- so you can be a part of the 'normal' biological clock that needs you attention and demands attention of you for whatever normal reasons .

I quit it because the associations were mostly bad with low life drug dealers panting on you to sell you some relief in the form of a ticket to help you live in Unnaturalville .

I play now at occasional venues - and I pick them carefully so they aren't so damaging to my sleep on a repetitive scale . I'll sub-in for traveling bands once in a while, because I've got a buddy with trailers full of all the live gear you could use up to the size of a small stadium and he gets me gigs that way .

So I can call what want to do and don't by my feelings, desires and needs and I don't depend on that money anyway, any more .

1419413 2016-04-24 09:32:00 I saw a headline somewhere along the lines of it being a Shock that drugs were involved, but seriously when a Musician or Celebrity without known health issues dies unexpectedly it's a shock if drugs aren't involved. Not being in the Industry I couldn't comment as to the reasons but it seems to be a very common thing. I wasn't ever much of a Prince fan but some of his music is permanently etched into my brain from my teenage years, it was always on the radio.

A while back I saw this www.youtube.com from Kevin smith regarding his Experience meeting Prince, seems like he was a bit of an odd Duck.

1419414 2016-04-24 15:34:00 For all those who dismiss Prince as only a moderately fair musician - I submit this YT video with some of the greatest current guitarists (see if you can spot them) and watch until Prince gets his chance to play!

The fact is he was a druggy.
