| 633634 | 2008-01-24 20:11:00 | I want to change my default browser, temporarily, to Internet Explorer, because want to download updates. I have done what is recommended from a google search. That is, I have gone into IE and Tools/Internet Options/Programs and ticked to ask IE to check to see if it is the default browser. Having done this and closing IE then next time I load it am supposed to get a message asking if I want to make it default. Sadly am not getting this message. Firefox just keeps popping up by default - even if I click on updates in IE ! Misty :help: PS - just been thinking that I will try now by rebooting the computer. Should not be necessary according to the sites advising on the procedure......but will try anything |

FF may be causing the problem. Also go back into IE Tools/Internet Options/Programs and click the button saying "Make Default". | wainuitech (129) | ||

Hi wainuitech When checked it was already unticked. However beside there is a box giving the option to check default and it confirms FF is the default .... but does not give option at that stage to change. Also go back into IE Tools/Internet Options/Programs and click the button saying "Make Default". Unfortunately there is no button that specific. Just the tick box saying to check. It is ticked. Have also tried "Reset Web Settings" which IE says is supposed to work..but not for me :( Misty |

Using that last method should automatically take you to IE and the M$ update site . I don't use my FF browser or "OPEN IN IE" from FF option for the updates . |

When I go Start then updates it still defaults to FF . Just having a try with automatic updates and have changed it to automatically update at 12 noon which is in five mins . Will see what happens then . One thing I have not mentioned is that there have been a couple of indications in the past day or so that some updates have failed . All seems tied with the new motherboard I have just got . Misty :( |

| 633639 | 2008-01-24 23:56:00 | Hmmm Looks like theres software damage. As Surfer said, if you click the windows update it should automatically open IE and away you go. If the below doesn't work you can try downloading IE7 Direct (www.microsoft.com) If its not try Dial A Fix (djlizard.net) << Thats a direct download, its a zipped file, so extract it and run > You will get a box Like This (www.imagef1.net.nz) Tick every thing, and press GO. It will hopefully repair the windows update, and then you should be able to download the updates. It may be IE7 That has the "Make default" button -Example Default button (www.imagef1.net.nz) I don't have a PC here with IE6 only. If its had a repair install then IE would have been taken back to IE6. |
