633522 2008-01-24 06:16:00 Trying to upgrade aflatmate's OS from XP Pro to XP Home +SP1 or XP Pro+ SP2..Existing OS in com won't accept SP2 on its own, probably because the OS is hookey.Came installed with com she bought 14 month back.
Glitch is that I cannot load the software for the DSE WebCam she bought & get it up & running.

I tried to upgrade to XP home+SP1 and received a message that "The upgrade cannot complete because the installed system is newer than the one that I'm trying to install"(even though it has no SP's installed??)
Then I did a F.A.S.T of all data on the XP Pro system, loaded the XP Home+SP1 onto a slave HDD and installed that as Master.
When I tried to load the stored backup data to this XP Home SP1 system, the data wouldn't transfer, reason given is that I'm"Trying to transfer from a system that is older than the one I'm sending info to"???
Neither of these no-g'o's make sense to me ,as I thought the object of F.A.S.T is to enable the migration of files, especially with an upgrade. Obviously,I thought wrong
Tried upgrading the XP without SP2 with the XP Pro+SP2 and am informed that i have to address "Third Party software"issues;or "Certain Core elements of Kernel have been modified and that I'll have to fix them 1st.Click 'Details' and I'm directed to the .'Updates' part of the install with it set off to download/install "A newer version of 'Messenger'.This new version just happens to be 'Live Messenger 8', which is already sitting sweet on the installed system.
Maybe it wants the 8.1 version of Messenger?Beauty.Dial-up about 2-3hours.
Also was informed that "Upgrade can complete but the service pack won't be installed" (Re:KB Q3 27516)

These links explain this error message;
www.tomshardware.com
support.microsoft.com

Wondering if I should go for that & then try to add SP2 later.?
Then I'll be wondering,if the upgrade hasn't done so & hasn't kept mates files etc in the process,am I going to be able to add them later when so far I'm being told F.A.S.T won't do .

Is perhaps my only option to do this upgrade the long one,ie; to drag&drop or copy everything from old HDD/OS,to the new HDD with XP Pro+ SP2 installed?
Can I transfer all the programs,Docs, music,IM & Yahoo 360 settings plus a lot more sites/settings my mate has got on existing HD.?
Any advice as to getting this job done easily & fully would be much appreciated. :help:

Her com has the following inside it:
MoBo:AsRock K7S41 GX
RAM: 512MB DDR2
HDD: 40GB WD ATA 5700rpm
Optics: LG CDR R-W
PSU: 250W

Trying to upgrade aflatmate's OS from XP Pro to XP Home +SP1 or XP Pro+ SP2 For starters which are you trying to do ?

If you have XP Pro of any versions you can not install XP Hm. XP PRO is the "better upgraded system"

XP HM to XP Pro is an Upgrade, XP Pro to XP Hm is a down grade and wont work.

Id suggest to save a mountain of trouble, copy all the data you want saved from the PC to another storage device. Wipe the drive and install XP Pro Drivers etc - then if its not already installed install Service Pack 2.

Then reinstall all programs and replace data.

Programs need to be reinstalled, data can be transfered.

633524 2008-01-24 07:27:00 Thank you Wainuitech for that .
Ultimately I want to install XP Pro & SP2 .
It is as u say that it'll all go smoother if I go the way you suggest,& that's what I'll be getting on with .
Thanx also for the procedural advice on having to install all the progs . etc .
Cheers

ps: I tried the XP Home upgrade even though I knew that it is a downgrade from XP Pro,only because the XP on her com isn't kosher & thought that maybe my legit version with SP1 may be a step forward .
Know it isn't now . ta

Whoooooooooo !! If I read that right YOUR xp on Her PC :groan: Cant do it legally unless you have a multi user license .

Even though it may go on OK, ( Fresh install) when attempting to activate it should come up saying already activated - then you have to phone Microsoft and explain why you are trying to install a single user license on more than 1 PC .

633526 2008-01-24 08:51:00 pps,Re: backing up the data to transfer to new OS

As I mentioned that the backup of data that I'd created using F.A.S.T Wiz on the OS that I want to get shot of & found that it wouldn't reinstall onto the XP Pro+SP2 I'd installed on another HDD as slave(dual boot),reason given that the F.A.S.T.Wiz.that I had used to make the back up is an older version of the sytem that I want to send it to & to use a newer version of F.A.S.T.Wiz,I think that I'll try this:-

Install XP Pro+SP2 on new HDD,,use the F.A.S.T Wiz on this OS to create the backup of data on the 'C' drive that I want to wipe out;swap the drives & make the slave master, reinstall all programs, then transfer the stored data to the XP Pro+SP2 that I intend for her to use.
I will not begin any of this until tomorrow, wait & see what suggestions come on this.
Maybe I'm making it more convolute than needs be.

That's a good point! Never thought of that ta lic; "> . I've just loaded OS to my com at least 8 times & validated it every time ta lic; "> .
What's the cost of getting a dual user license from Microsoft? Can I do it over the phone or on the net?Is it cheaper to buy a New OS & VLK?
I'll find out tomorrow ta lic; "> . ta

633528 2008-01-24 09:15:00 Personally when I copy data for a customers PC, I attach a formatted drive - no OS, either USB or as a secondary, then open the host drive, copy/paste the files, pictures, Data, address book, bookmarks, Email accounts, and what ever they have that they want to keep to the second drive .

Double check I got every thing, in fact I always ghost the whole drive to a spare so I make sure nothings lost - then after installing the new system simply reattach the drive and copy/paste back .

Its amazing some times where people hide stuff . So I tell them I will keep a copy for 3 days, check nothings missing - contact me if it is - after that I wipe the ghost drive .

I'll find out tomorrow . ta It went OK on your PC because its the same hardware to the license .

Cheaper to get a OEM with some hardware, or see if you can pick one up from some place like trade Me - got to be a bit careful there thats is actually a genuine OS with Product key .
