301966 2004-12-11 08:12:00 Hi all.
Thinking of upgrading my stereo in our new (2nd hand) car - only has AM radio with a 1" speaker part of the radio unit!

Anyway, i was worndering how hard it is to install a stereo unit and speakers.
I have a good 'basic' knowledge of electronics etc but should i go to a Pro? and if so - anyone no how much they cost (for a 4 speaker installation and a stereo unit)

301967 2004-12-11 08:21:00 I always install my own,And everytime i'm halfway through im kicking myself for not get it done properly, and when i'm finished i kick myself twice.

Although having said that,The one time i did pay to get it done i was mucked around for days, finaly marched down to the "fitters" to see what the hell was goin on.....and they had sent the wagon elsewhere because they couldn't do it.

When i did find where it was sent they guys there informed me it had been dumped on them with the entire dash removed and all the cableing in a huge mess.......They were fair spewin, I was spewin,And the original shop tried to bill me $250 more then what the guys who fitted it charged them.

No wonder i have a temper.

301968 2004-12-11 08:40:00 If you haven't already bought the new unit, get prices from different shops then bargain for free installation.

A specialist car stereo shop should install it for nothing if you buy from them. You need to know your prices though or you could find that the price is inflated to allow for installation.

I found this site excellent for installation information.

301969 2004-12-11 08:50:00 ok,
thanks for that guys.
I was thinking of buying from Repco - but i just found this on TM:
www.trademe.co.nz

It fits what i want (Mp3 player) plus at a good price - but i wouldn't have the faintest idea whats good and not!

301970 2004-12-11 09:21:00 no one no's of a good site where u can compare and read reviews on head units do they? All the sites i've found are commercial ones.

And a few Q's.
I see some that state they play MP3, then some others say MP3/WMA.
So will that mean that the ones that just say MP3 won't play WMA??

Do you need the Line out, or RCA out etc?

Whats Mosfet? (i see Mosfet 4x 50w)

Would yu recomend a cheaper unit and an Amp, or a more expensive unit w/o an amp?

And how are the sizes measured?
I just measured the grills in the car (for the speakers) and they were:
Front:
16x14cm - 6.5"x 5.5"
Rear:
21x14cm
8"x5.5"

Does this mean 16cm speakers are for teh front, andd 6x9" for the back?

cheers

301971 2004-12-11 17:00:00 Traditionally cars were designed for small speakers in the front and large for the back . But when you think about it, if you went to a concert, do you turn around with your back to the stage so that the sound comes from the back?

The logistics is to get the large speakers in the front but space is the problem, also speakers are normally positioned low (dash & door) so high frequency sounds are directly at your feet .

If at all possible get components for the front so that you have tweeters positioned high directed at your ears, the bass sound can direct anywhere .

I wouldnt go overboard for the back (you dont sit there and why spend heaps of money so that backseat passengers benefit more than the driver) just a decent brand 3 way would be enough .

Get a pro to instal, saves time and money if you screw it up .

odds are you will not have any factory speaker holes in the rear parcel shelf. DO NOT install speakers in the rear parcell shelf as you may fail a WOF !!. check with garage (and pro radio installers) first.

Well spoken tweak'e!

I know of someone who cut holes in the back parcel shelf (metal structure) and it effectively wrote the car off .

Cost of restoring the integral body structure for a WOF and having it certified was greater than the car value .

Makes for an expensive radio installation .

301974 2004-12-12 06:22:00 What are component speakers?
Are they a pack of normal and tweeters?
Can you just buy normal ones, and add on tweeters?

As for the rear panel shelf - may i ask what that is!!
There are covers/grills for speakers at the back - is this what you are talking about?
I'll go have alot whats under it
