2004-03-05 09:22:00 | Batteries come in different capacities (the amount of energy they hold). Measured in Milliamps/hour (mA/hr) 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1700, 1800, 2000, 2200 are all typical capacities. Think of it as the size of the fuel tank. I have sets of 4 each of 1400, 1700, 2000 types, which were the best available at the time each set was purchased. The cameras usually use 4, and they must all be the same capacity and type in each set. You must not mix sizes. Now available up to 2200 mA/hr or more. As an example an Alkaline (non rechargeable) should hold about 2800 mA/hr. The higher capacity the longer they go before a charge. Remember the zoom on an S5000 is already x10, so a tele lens on top of that may make it too hard to keep still if not using a tripod. Re the "insurance" they try to sell, its optional. Its not essential. They sell it because they make money from it. Your choice, the camera has a warranty irrespective of insurance.

2004-03-05 09:27:00 | Beetle, if you are not in a huge rush, then just go to as many camera shops as possible and find a knowledgeable salesperson (some of these people are in the know while others are useless). Print these helpful F1 comments with you along with a few web page specifications of your favourite cameras. After several shops you will be an expert on digcams. The last shop I went to (in Wgtn) was one with the most knowledgeable guys, and I wound up telling him a few things about the Canon that he was not aware of. Yep, shopping around and asking questions is the best way to learn and the best way to get a camera that you will be your trusty companion, etc. ;) Steve L

2004-03-05 09:49:00 | << even if i got the fuji, and it has say 6 mega pixels i can set it to run a lower pixel rates ? when i take photos? but i like the idea of not having to upgrade it in so much of a hurry if it has a little lee way in MP size, as this is going to be a long time before we ever upgrade it again. >> Beetle, most mid range cams are at least 3.1 Mp, and this is plenty. 6 Mp would be an overkill unless you plan to do poster size photos (but you'd have to go to a specialist printer to get it made!). Really, the big Mp thing is a trap and a status thing. Even a camera with 2.1 Mp would suit just about everyone (except for the status thing). MOVIE MODE: forgot to mention before about the resolution of doing film clips. My Canon A70 has 3 resolution settings. What this means is that taking a movie at the lowest setting will allow much longer movies since it will not fill up the memory card so fast. But the lowest setting results in a small movie. I like to view our movies on the PC 17 inch screen full size, or better yet on our 29 inch TV. Using the medium resolution give a movie that is nearly video cam quality (most people would not notice the difference). At the highest resolution it gives vidcam quality. Normally I use medium resolution. Now if you don't think you will shoot movies, think again. Having a digcam changes your photography activity, especially if it has a movie mode and doubly so if the movie are with sound. Resolutions: I am doing this off the top of my head, but the lowest resolution is 320 x 210 pixels (or close to these numbers). Medium resolution is 640 by 480, and high is 1280 x 1070 or whatever - cannot recall. The point is this: find out if the Fuji (or whatever camera you like the best now) has changeable movie resolution settings. If you get stuck with the small 320 x 210, forget it and get another camera. By the way, I just had a look at Goddie's camera. Nice lens! MACRO : this allows close up work. Most all cameras have this feature, but try it yourself in the shop to see how close you can get. Yawn.......going to bed now........

2004-03-06 01:42:00 | LOL i meant to say if it had 6 mega pixels, not that it does. it has 3.1 the one i am looking at. this was just a open question not based on the actual product i am looking at. i want to get as many MP wise as pos, but also want it to do what i want as in zoom, zoom is probably my main instigator on this subject. but not to the point of overkill or to the point little or of no use to me as is. and no if it does all i want on this size, i am not looking for a larger MP size. i just know i will want a large memory card as i usually take anything up to 6 films away with me when 4X4 as i am the main photography for the team. (photography is my hobby) so will be lugging round all the gear and both types of cameras possibly. i want to have new camera as soon as, so at easter i am all sorted with how to use it for the local race 4X4 then. plenty of time i hope. just got to be patient till next week........ the fuji is probably what i will get unless i find something else similar or better for price. beetle

2004-03-06 07:47:00 | All very good advice Steve_L. I certainly wasn't suggesting that Beetle goes off and gets the 8 Megapixel camera. In MY case I want the best camera I can afford as I don't think I will be able to afford to buy another one. The Sony F828 has many features and I may not even use all of them. The feature from the Sony that I like is than you can hold the camera up over a crowd in front of you and tilt the lense down but still frame the photo well. I don't know how often I will do that but it's nice to know it is there. I don't know if any other camera will do this. Just like Operatings sytems ( Shudder ), Cars, Washing machines etc... etc... Ad Nauseaum.... It's horses for courses. Why are there so many arguments about different brands? Take a Ford owner talking to a Holden owner for example or even a (Win owner ( or license ) as we don't own Win anyway) talking to a BeOS owner. I guess we all like to think that we know best and if we back it up by actually spending money on a product then find that someone says, "You could have bought the Ford (or Holden) at a cheaper price." then we have to justify the purchase. Most of us are constrained by budget matters otherwise we would all live in Bill Gates' place and drive a Ferrari or Rolls to work on a regular basis. Whoops.... That's an upgrade from the Ford vs Holden debate. I think we had this type of arguement in School even.... "My Dad is bigger than YOUR Dad....Nahnah." "Yes but My Dad's a policeman so there..." We all do this don't we? Just human nature I guess. Anyway. Please don't take this as a dig against you or your post. Take a look at my first sentence. :-)

2004-03-06 08:02:00 | dipstick001. The thought occurred to me to take you up on your offer but the $2200 price tag you say here has me worried. It is less than Noel Leeming will charge though. :-) But. Being the sort of person I am I will not come and play with your cameras then not buy from you. You can Email me at tony (.) frew (at) southwaikato (dot) net (.) nz if you want. Put in the subject line Digital Camera otherwise your Email is likely to be bounced.

2004-03-06 08:23:00 | Godfather... I know you are talking to Beetle and in my humble opinion you do well. Actually I would say you do more than well. :-) The only camera I have seen with "docking cradles" are Kodak. I plug my current 2.1 Megapixel camera into my USB port and it turns up as both a video device and still picture device. Drivers ( twain ) installed using WinXP. As you say. Just use the camera like a floppy drive or CD and drag and drop under WinXP. It works fine for me. Having said that some software can be important too. I have Photoshop 7 and Paintshop Pro 8 on my computer. Mostly I use Paintshop pro 8 to edit photos and I would recommend this to anyone. Paid more for the software than what I paid for the cameras didn't I?
