304006 2004-12-21 22:07:00 .222 is a fine round for varmint or small animal hunting. its very underpowered (which makes very easy to shoot with) and certainly not recommened for deer hunting, with the exception of a pro hunter who only does neck/head shots. tweak'e (69)
304007 2004-12-21 23:11:00 I have shot many deer with my .222, and out to about 300yards i would be perfectly comfortable going for a neck/head shot with it as long as the animal wasnt walking around lagbort (5041)
304008 2004-12-22 04:10:00 Ummmmmm..... .306? I have used a .308. This is inches of course.

.22 = Rabbits, Hares, 'Possums, Feral cats etc.
.243 or .247 = Goats, Deer.
.303 = Deer and Pigs.
6.5 - 8.00mm and up will deal with the same as .303

I have never hunted Wapati down the South Island in which case I would probably use something with a fairly high muzzle velocity and a telescopic sight.

I like the cut down .308 with a scope friend of mine has one with a laser. But they are a little to heavy in the back kick for me.

Thats why I like the 7.62 with a laser. Although technically out of range it will still ping goats at 800 meter's, which I enjoy doing, as the rest of them hang around for a second going "whats wrong with him" so you can clip another couple before they breake/bolt, If your lucky.
