633903 2008-01-27 06:19:00 Yep, never go Brother. I work at a place that sells them, I don't ever recommend them unless someone is just looking for something with cheap initial cost and doesn't care about print quality at all. I've had heaps of bad feedback about them, especially in terms of print quality, some are very reliable but i've seen many with unrepairable errors.

Canon and Epson are both very cool, HP is alright as well but depends how much you want to spend initially, it's generally a better idea to go for the newer ones which give you 6 cartridges instead of just the black/tri colour duo. HP also has most of the time, the most expensive cartridges.

If you want only mono prints then why not go for a laser printer rather than inkjets? They are generally alot more initially and they do look pretty ugly and they're fat too, but they work out so much cheaper in the long run.

Good luck.

633904 2008-01-27 07:08:00 B/w laser printer would be the way IMO after going to uni with a laptop and a portable color bubblejet Canon.

Much cheaper and look far more professional.

If you want to print color for yourself which prob not unless you enrolled in some art course or such ... get a color inkjet. Check the d-photo magazine at the library .. for free and try to get the ink cartridge so they are in diff color cos .. if you get the all in one .. if one ink is out .. but the others are still not yet ... you have to replace those as well ..since its a 3 or 4 or whatever inks in one cartridge.

Canon b/w laser good, have one but when you low in toner .. it refuse to print .. which pee me off ... cos if you turn the printer off and back on for the few sheets it prints and there is nothing wrong with the low toner thing.

633905 2008-01-27 07:51:00 HP Laser printers are OK. Lasers are best and cheapest to run if you want B/W. Bantu (52)
633906 2008-01-27 08:03:00 What about Lexmark multifunctions?

www.nfc.co.nz

I'm currently looking at this model, it has a built in 802.11G card for wireless printing. The cartridges are on the pricey side ($45 for a black one) but do around 450 pages.

633907 2008-01-27 08:06:00 If you are set on a multi function then google for multi function reviews and see what is good/bad from the reviews.

You can probably get a print server and hook up the Canon printer to that.
A couple of print server reviews in PC World a month or two back.

633908 2008-01-27 09:09:00 Most people with half a brain use separate units.

I have the Brother laser at $134,so far it has lasted me for 12 months, which is brilliant, when it runs out of ink I will get latest model of same.

633909 2008-01-27 09:49:00 after running inkjets, then inkjet scanner/copier/printers for years printing mainly b&w (few pages a week). It seemed like everytime needed the printer, a colour or black had run out or dried up. (would print colour once a month) maybe 50 pages between having to get a cartidge.
Have now gone to a $140 brother laser 2040 and has been a rock for the last 9mths. Its just nice knowing that when you need the printer that it is going to work, and the 2500 page toner should last me years.
any colour pictures will do at the local harvey normans (top quality and doesnt fade like my old inkjets).

633910 2008-01-27 10:52:00 yeah inkjet if you don't use often .. well it depends some have and some don't - the thing to watch is that the ink can clog and have horizontal banding lines.

If you want a multi fuction that is cool ... many pple like them .. cos they can be used as a photocopier without the PC being on and you can do little things like reduce or enlarge to match paper etc... some also sport a builtin fax machine. It also saves space as well and less cable tangles.

In terms of quality I think they are more/less the same unless you get the more higher ended flatbed scanners which tend to cost a fair bit .. say $400 and up.

We use the used bought A3+ printer inkjet for photo's with my club.
For others we just use the Canon MF laser printer / scanner which mum wanted a all in one .... If not maybe we would of just used the old HP 6L but old printers don't print that well .. like a PDF color catalog it does not print .. maybe too less printer RAM. So we just use it to print simple stuff. On the flatbed we have a Epson V700 a highish one predom. cos it scans film for my hobby.

633911 2008-01-27 19:38:00 Have now gone to a $140 brother laser 2040

Did not know lasers were that cheap. Are they still available?

BTW, I use DSE ink cartridges for my Epson ink jet. B&W costs around $10 and lasts a long time.

633912 2008-01-27 19:48:00 If you go with an Inkjet stick with Epson or Canon. Inkjet ink is very expensive stuff and even more expensive if you get an HP Inkjet.

I have a high end HP Laser printer albiet a few years old now and an Epson Photo R800 and Epson R2400. I have had about 7-8 Epson's prior to these and they do all i require. I ONLY Use Epson Ink, but at cost price it is a bit cheaper.

This case is going to hit HP hard when it is finally settled, it has been around for a couple of years.
