633663 2008-01-25 04:35:00 Are you using a modem / router? If you are it is relevant., if its got ethernet ports on it.

You dont need the crossover cable.

You plug the router into the back of the PC or laptop whatever the router is connected to. And the laptop/PC into one of the router's other Ethernet ports..

Did u enable file sharing and create a folder then share a folder on both?

He is probably running one of the free modems with only one ethernet port.

Plug the computers into each other, set up a static IP address for each computer then start sharing. I can't remember the steps for Vista, so I will let someone else give you more detailed instructions

633665 2008-01-25 09:52:00 Ok Greven if i plug the Ethernet cord into the modem and other computer what is my next step. Setting up a static IP address? andrewb3363 (13307)
633666 2008-01-25 16:24:00 Double click on the LAN connection / properties. TCP/IP. On the XP PC.

Select use the following ip.

And put in something like

192.168.0.2 (or 1, depending on which PC is connected to the modem)
subnet 255.255.255.0

Type in 192.168.0.1 (If XP is networked to Vista, which has the modem). Altho it shouldnt really matter. I dont think XP will get on the net.

Do the same for the Vista PC. Expect type in 192.168.0.1. Dont ask me how, I've never used Vista

And make sure both have the same workgroup name (I think Vista's default Workgroup name is Workgroup). Make sure XP's default Workgroup name is Workgroup as well.

Then install this on XP (www.microsoft.com)

If SP2 is on it. And I think removing IPv6 on Vista might help things.

Wherever this is.

Gigabit ethernet actually does support auto-crossover with normal CATx cables. This means that getting a crossover cable is completely optional.

Cheers :)
