Possibly, but unfortunately we cannot dictate or guess what sellers call their products. But "component" would suggest that they are bare "speakers", and not "speakers in cabinets" which are also called "speakers" in the shop.

> Can you just buy normal ones, and add on tweeters?

Money will by (almost) anything.

> As for the rear panel shelf - may i ask what that is!!

Does your car have a back seat? Does it have a rear window? The rear shelf is the bit beween the back seat and the back window.

> There are covers/grills for speakers at the back - is this what you are talking about?

If they are on the back shelf, yes.

> I'll go have alot whats under it

Whatever you do, don't "enlarge" the holes or make new "holes" to accommodate the speakers (screw holes would be OK, not speaker holes) in the back metal shelf panel. That can damage the basic structure of the car, some rely on that panel for strength.

301977 2004-12-12 07:03:00 If you look at a normal speaker you will see that there is a centre speaker (sometimes 2) on top of the bass speaker . These speakers transmit both high and low sounds .

This ( . firsteprocure . com/prod_images/avakit65_b . gif" target="_blank">ecarhifi . firsteprocure . com) is a pic of components (just a random pic I found via google) .
The square box things are splitters . As the sound enters these (from the stereo or via the amp) then the splitter directs high sounds to tweeters and low sounds to the bass .

If money permits then I would definitely recommend these but you also have to consider installation of the tweeters as they can be tricky depending on the car .

301978 2004-12-12 07:43:00 just checked the back of the car - theres space for speakers at the rear - at the mo they have plastic coverings in the metal body - so thts all good.

As for the components speakers, if money allows - i'll get them (all starting to add up!)

I just have to pick the unit now, and its out of:

Sony CDXR3300 $280
The One off Trademe (link above) $230
Panasonic CQ-C1300W $250
Pioneer DEH-P4650MP $300
JVC KD-G455 $240

jeeze, now the fun begins!!

301979 2004-12-12 07:49:00 o, sorry, sony one is $320. fergie (424)
301980 2004-12-12 08:07:00 ok, i decided, is either the panasonic or the one from TM.
I got down to these 2 as the TM one is a good deal, and the PS one plays WMA also.
But i'm leaning to the TM, now just gotta decide if i need the Sub out version ($30 more)

as for speakers - sorry for all this, i'm just using it for reference for me!
Either:
1) Sony Component 200w XSG5160 $130 FROMT
Panasonic A6900N 3 way 180w $80 Rear

or
2) Sony XSGT6047 250watt 4 way (do u need 4 way for front speakers?) $100 FRONT
Sony XSGT6937X 3way 350watt $100

thoughts?

Might want to check these guys out... all the units you've mentioned available there, some up to $50 cheaper.

They also do good speaker prices. A mate just bought a Pioneer Head Unit and Speakers through them.

301983 2004-12-12 09:52:00 Hehe... well worth the look.

Self install shouldn't be tooo hard. I've done a few of them myself and had no significant problems.

301984 2004-12-23 21:42:00 Well, this is all different ain't it!!
How long has it been back up and running? Here i have been checking my Pressf1 link in my favourites (the addy with no www) everyday waiting to see when its back up and running, and thought i'd better check the direct link today - and whaddaya no!!

Anyway, i thought i'd let you guys all no what happened with the speakers/unit and installation since you all gave me alot of advice.

I went with Sony's Component Speakers for the front, and Sony 350watt 3ways for the rear.
And i went with the Sony CDX-F5500 Mp3 headunit.

I installed the speakers with relative ease - only trouble was (as i didn't have a manual for teh car - and after hrs of searching on the net) i didn't no which cable was positive and which negative!

When i put in the Stereo, i just took out the glove box, and i could reach up to the old one from there, and pushed it out.
I had to go to repco to get a wiring harness adapter, and i plugged it all in, turned the key - but nothing!
Spent about 3hrs checking the wiring and eveyrthing else, when i relised i had blown a fuse - a replacement now had teh sounds flowing!!

I noticed one speaker sounded really distorted, so i changed the + - wires around, and it sounds alot better, but i'm still not entirely sure if tehy're right.

So thanks a heap you guys
And merry Xmas, or Happy Festive season if thts more appropriate.
Cheers

301985 2004-12-24 22:58:00 The most important thing is what make and model of car do you have?
If its an old ****ter you might as well do it yourself the installation might cost more than the car.
