633893 2008-01-25 09:54:00 I'm looking for a sub-$200 multifunction inkjet which will primarily used for polytech starting next month .

I'll most probably be printing a lot mostly blank and white notes so ideally the consumables should be cheap and long lasting .

I've got a wireless network setup at home with 3 computers connected to it . At the moment I've got a cheap Canon printer connected to the desktop pc which needs to be on the whole time if I wish to print from another workstation which is a tad bit annoying .

I've been looking at these few models in particular:
. tastech . co . nz/details/103253 . htm" target="_blank">www . tastech . co . nz
. tastech . co . nz/details/103034 . htm" target="_blank">www . tastech . co . nz

What are your recommendations?

633894 2008-01-25 11:33:00 The Canons you are looking at are good, or a Brother DCP-150c or similar, get one with at least 4 different ink cartridges, more economic.

As for sharing a USB printer on a network...replace your current wireless router with this one?

www.ascent.co.nz

I have one of those, it's really good.

www.computerfood.co.nz is a good site for inkjet consumables.

633895 2008-01-25 17:10:00 It shouldnt matter if the printer is USB, wireless, or whatever.

The brother MFC I've got here is USB. Altho, its connected by ethernet at the mo, it also worked using wireless, from the other computer.

You would have to buy some sort of printer server. So you can print from one to the other (even if the PC with the printer is turned off).

633896 2008-01-25 19:11:00 The catch is how many pages you get per cartridge.
These do less than 300.

I wouldn't buy any printer of any kind that does less than 850.

You can check by going to www.consumables.co.nz and looking up the model then clicking on its cartridge and it says how many pages.

633897 2008-01-25 19:30:00 pctek has the right idea - don't look at the cost of the printer, instead look at the cost of the replacement cartridges and how many pages you can expect from each one. There is your true cost. andrew93 (249)
633898 2008-01-26 03:29:00 Just don't buy Brother! Horrible Horrible printers and service. Their 'cleaning" cycles eat up ink faster than printing stuff does. beeswax34 (63)

Do you have any models in particular that you would recommend? Is that colour or B&W?

Most of the Canon and Brother 3-colour ones only do around 360 pages. =/

Black. (White comes from the paper, there is no white ink).

I have no idea about multifunctions, I've only ever bought just printers.

Canon, Epson or HP only.

633901 2008-01-26 22:12:00 If you only want Black printing, would a laser printer be better? PJ Poppa John (284)
633902 2008-01-26 22:15:00 IMHO Multi Functions suck. I have had clients with a few different makes/models most have problems with them.

I have had the most complaints from Brother multi functions.

Brother does good laser printers.
Epson and Canon do good Inkjets
Epson does good scanners

Faxing is almost a thing of the past, I have not sent a fax for years, my old fax machine has about a cm of dust on it.
