633653 2008-01-24 21:11:00 Hi I am going to purchase Crossover cables to connect my laptop and pc. What do I need and how do I plug it in? I am a little confused andrewb3363 (13307)
633654 2008-01-24 21:16:00 One of these (search.dse.co.nz 70a&site=&w=crossover&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&submit=Go)

The 1st 3.

And ethernet cable, depending on how far apart the 2 are.

Just plug the crossover in at one end of the ethernet cable and plug it into the network card on the laptop or PC.

You only need a xover, if you havent got a hub or router with ethernet ports

633655 2008-01-24 21:17:00 What operating system is on each computer? e.g. Windows XP, Vista? Are you running any firewalls? mOOseCaNNoN (13319)
633656 2008-01-24 21:50:00 xp and vista and yes they are running firewalls. Where do I find the network card in both a vista laptop and xp desktop? andrewb3363 (13307)
633657 2008-01-24 22:07:00 Its on the side of the laptop and back of the PC.

It looks like a phone jack connection.

A crossover / ethernet cable will only go in one connection.

633658 2008-01-25 03:01:00 Hey guys i am having problems. I got the cable it fits:), but only the vista shows signs of the network. How are you suppose to set up the network correctly? andrewb3363 (13307)
633659 2008-01-25 03:40:00 What are you on dialup or broadband, if u want both on the net.

Share a folder on both.

MAKE sure the workgroup names are the same (Workgroup, I think is the default for Vista).

633660 2008-01-25 03:53:00 I am on broadband but that is irrelevant Im not trying to connect to the internet just to share files via crossover cable andrewb3363 (13307)
633661 2008-01-25 03:56:00 Are you using a modem / router? If you are it is relevant., if its got ethernet ports on it.

You dont need the crossover cable.

You plug the router into the back of the PC or laptop whatever the router is connected to. And the laptop/PC into one of the router's other Ethernet ports..

Did u enable file sharing and create a folder then share a folder on both?

633662 2008-01-25 04:18:00 Right click on folder you want to share, go to properties, then click on the sharing tab select which option you want from there.
