634653 2008-01-28 06:23:00 Hi Guy's

I'm currently looking at buying a new laptop for Uni.

Couple of specs:
Battery must last at least 3hrs when doing simple word processing longer the better.
Screen must be 14" or less to keep weight down.
Cost less then $1500 the lower the better.
At least 1GB of RAM.

Don't care if its running Vista or XP.

Not an Acer!!!

Am open to any suggestions.

Thanks

Cheap WinXP laptops are not easy to come by these days.

(Slight digression) Which University are you heading to?

Cheers :)

What in particular are you studying?

Pretty sure an Asus EEE PC meets your checklist; just needs a $80 upgrade to 2GBs of RAM and XP installation. ;)

Nah don't need to worry about gaming or another heavy stuff, my desktop is capable of handling that .

Will be studying Computer Science at AUT .

I had previously looked at an EEE but the keyboard and screen are a bit small for my liking .

Thanks

ASUS F5RL-XP
Core Duo T2330
2Gb RAM
120GB HDD
Widescreen
Carry bag and mouse
Win XP
Wifi, LAN, Dialup, Bluetooth - think that covers it all, LOL.

Sub $1500.

If you are going to major in multimedia and design, having dedicated graphics is almost a must.

If you are going to major in software design or programming, having powerful CPU is important.

Incidentally, have you done your homework at PriceSpy and DSE websites?

Cheers :)

pctek almost does cover everything although as I stated I would prefer if it didn't have a 15.4" display.

Jamuz yeah I've looked at pricespy and dse, but have not had the time to throughly research the individual models for things like battery life which no reseller seems to really mention as have been working long days lately.

Doesn't need to have particularly good graphics or even processor strength as AUT has computers for projects I have my desktop and another laptop (heavy and crap battery).

634662 2008-01-29 06:46:00 A few of the options I came across:
HP 6515b (www.playtech.co.nz)
Dell Vostro 1200 (www1.ap.dell.com)
Sony Vaio CR22 (www.sony.co.nz)
ASUS Z99He (www.dse.co.nz)

Not sure about the battery life of the HP or ASUS though. (Any ideas where I can find this?)
The Dell's nice and small.
The Sony's got great battery life.

Any feedback on these or others would be much appreciated.

Thanks
