634567 2008-01-28 06:02:00 Unless somebody has some extra server space, where can I back up over 8 500GIG HDDs of videos and MP3s?

I have a lot of things on DVDs and CDs . . but that makes it necessary to load and run them off that media if I want to see or hear them .

If I lose everything (No . . I am not gonna dual boot KUBUNTU again!) . . . I'd like to have some off premises site for them .

What do most other people do?

Man thats a lot! Either way, it's not going to be a easy task .

Is there any reason you need to back up the lot? I mean Backups are great but thats a lot of backups .

634569 2008-01-28 06:59:00 I have a great number of movies and music and some other things that I have in the past...er...lost to reasons that should not be talked about here again.
They all started with the "L" word though.

I know that the HDDS are all getting old..over two years now and almost running 24/7/365...so it's only a matter of time until something goes plop.

I guess I should start saving it all to DVDs and MP3s huh....

Many of the vids are saved already in an (ahem!) archive...but the MP3s come bombing in all day long and I don't really know how to batch save them all.

I usually get over 100 MP3s a day when I am trading them..then I cull the duplicates and just let the others stay as long as they are in some way different.

We have a rather strange network here in my neighborhood and I get some really arcane stuff sometimes. I try to save it all.

634570 2008-01-28 07:08:00 You Need to build yourself a windows Home Server for backups - that way you just add in as many drives as you want when required.

When doing beta testing, the guys at MS showed a "test rig" that was used to stress the OS to see how much storage it could take - Total of 19 (yes nineteen) Hard Drives, ranging from 120Gb Upwards. - impressive - Forget how many tetra bytes it was, but ran smooth as.

634571 2008-01-28 07:12:00 Of course, I am using the Proxy laws here for my files..which may not hold water in your country.

Until the next election..and as soon as we see which way the winds blows..we are allowed to archive ands view things we actually own and possess.

The times they are a-changin'.

Thats great, so that includes ripping commercial DVDs that you own?

If so then programs like Shrink should be legal?

634576 2008-01-28 08:51:00 Surfer you might try something like this.

Personally I use CDs and DVDs for off site backup depending on the files.
