2008-01-27 12:01:00 | This is a continuation of the "MS & AVG Updates won't install" thread I posted 2 days ago. Sorted out the AVG update problem(date/time settings @ Nov)..Correcting date/time didn't allow install MS Updates. Opening Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs I see an entry for "Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP" and it is a whopping 954.00MB. Also an entry for "Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature pack 1.0".(no file size given) They are not updates & to the best of my knowledge have not been installed manually by me;unless I installed them when I was manually downloading & installing updates two weeks back.Highly unlikely to do that as using dial-up connection & usually only on net 10pm-7am.(1MB/hr, be impossible). I digress. Using Event Viewer shows that the updates that won,t install,ie."Security Update for Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 & 11 (KB941569)" & "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool-January 2008" have been trying to install automatically & 3am since Jan 21st but in the past 2 days the installation procedure has been changed to read"An Administrator must load updates". well, that's me.I'm the only person with a User Account on this computer.I set a password for my Acc. and tried using that to install updates but made no difference. Also,"Media Format 11 Runtime" already showed as an installed update in Control Panel>Add/Remove Progs.I removed it & Media player 11 to see if updates would go in;they didn't. (there's also reference to RunOnce but that's to do with IE7 that I have installed.Word is that runonce is no good & to boot it out, along with IE7,& msiexe.exe......anyway,they're irrelevant @ the mo.) Scanned com with "Spybot S&D",excluding cookies I got this:- "Microsoft Windows.FirewallBypass" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\S hareAcces\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfil e\AuthorisedApplication\List\C:\WINDOWS\system32" "Threat:Security: This is being flagged whenever an application is configured to accept incoming connections through the Windows Firewall. Most Applications do not need to accept incoming connections like servers do" Going to designated place using regedit shows this:- Name Type Data (Default) REG_SZ (value not set) .............many others....................................... REG_SZ............................................ ......................................... C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe REG_SZ C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe:*:Enabled:Microsoft C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe:*:Enabled:Microsoft Management Console To find out about the MS MCC Client Pack 1.0 I went to the following links:- MS help/support site support.microsoft.com & to this one www.omgili.com 1.0+for+Windows+XP+is+this+necessary&x=20&y=8 Not knowing how it installed into my com & the fact that I can't unearth it in Programs or by the use of "Search",DO i need this installation in my com?...if it is installed. Bottom line is What's my chances of survival if I SHOOT IT?? ..........that which I can see of it, that is...... maybe the MS updates will install then.dunno.Let me know if you do,cheers. | 634423 | 2008-01-27 19:25:00 | Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP and Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature pack 1.0 are updates. What the 1st one does, I wouldnt have a clue. It looks like the 2nd one is for Zune players (For WMP 11). Why it instals this I wouldnt have a clue. MS seems to think everyone has one. I dont, and dont intend to get one. Info here (support.microsoft.com)

2008-01-28 02:20:00 | Found this answer (www.techtalkz.com) to a similar question about Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 is an optional component on Windows XP. One of the elements it installs (msdelta.dll) is part of Windows Vista, used by Windows Update on that platform. However, the functions provided by that DLL can be also used by other programs on other versions of Windows (Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, specifically). Therefore, this component may have been installed as a part of some other program on your system. So you probably don't want to remove that component, as doing so would be likely to "break" whatever program(s) on your system that use it. I dont have it on my XP Pro with all ms updates, so what triggered it on yours I dont know (you dont have Visual Studio or similar do you? - they require it I think)

2008-01-28 11:04:00 | Thank you all for your advice & links.I'll be looking into them through the night. In reply to your questions & comments:- Speedy Gonzales; Thanks for the link.I had just come from Help & Support where I'd been looking into the use of MSconfig.exe to diagnose problems etc. It's relatively new to me and I tread carefully.Your link will help a lot,Cheers.I removed WMP11 & the Media Runtime11 that were installed & reinstalled WMP11.Media Runtime11 must come with it because it's installed.I think I will revert to WMP10.It hasn't got all the fancy graphics of artwork etc,but I like it.MP11 gets a bit confusing from memory when I used it last year.To each his own.I do not have Zune installed. Can't see it anywhere. bevy121; I don't have Visual Studio installed. Nero7 Premium 7.10.1.0,WMP11,VLC,Win.Movie Maker2 is about the lot here.I think that I have loaded the MCC Pack manually when I was getting them myself. But,as I mentioned -954 MB! The link you sent made me laugh! The poor chaps dilemma cheered me up.Ta beeswax34;I'll check out Zune.Pass the time.Cheers Bantu; Ditto! I have a plethora or malicious tool removers. So many in fact that they're probably playing Mercenaries @ War "Cry Havoc.Let loose the Dogs..." Had a strange thought from some of the things that I was getting info about when looking about into the no-install MS Updates-I was inferring that my com had become a 'server'.Silly thought. Well I'm away to delve & read up,Thanks again

2008-01-28 11:55:00 | A passing thought as to how the Microsoft Compression Client pack1 came to be installed in my com:-5-6 weeks back I installed & used an MS XP Pro that was slipstreamed with SP3.As the set up seemed to be troublesome I removed it,reformatted C drive & clean installed XP home+SP2.I may have manually downloaded the MCC Pack1 from MS updates & have installed it from the folder of updates that I have.IThink I'll look into the folder, see what's there. ciao | gza (13233) | |
2008-01-28 19:30:00 | SP3 ISN'T out yet. It's either an RC or beta. And probably buggy. | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
