2008-01-26 02:45:00 | I.ve noticed that the only MS update loaded in my com is ' Media Format Runtime'.No size shown for it but I can't recall seeing any size before, anyway. Auto-updates has been on for sometime so there should be more than one installed.I.ve set it to download them & notify me for cusrom install. Also had message @ shutdown that updates are being installed past week. I think that it has been the same two updates and they're not installing.I turned Auto updates off last night when I noticed they weren't installing after I received message saying that the 2 updates can't be inatalled. They are 'Media Format Runtime" & "Malicious Software Removal Tool" On top of that, today when I boot up com, ,AVG 7.5 does its auto-update,informs me that update successful,& the taskbar Icon is still checked black & gray;ie,'Virus database out of date'. Open the control centre, see that database highlighted in red,& click update only to receive message that com all up to date. Any ideas these two things?? :groan: Compaq Presario S3010AN CPU: AMD Athlon XP2000+ 1.67GHz MoBo: FIC KM266-8325 RAM: 768MB DDR 266 (1x512 1x256) PSU: Bestec 250W Chipset: VIA KM266-8325 (VIA ProSavage) HDD: WDC 800 (80GB) IDE ATA Optics: Asus DRW 1814BL DL QuieTrack Lightscribe Multi Monitor: Philips 170S LCD Flatscreen

2008-01-26 03:00:00 | Ok, for a start, what version of Windows do you have? And is it a validated copy, because some updates you won't be able to get and Malicious Software Removal tool is one of them. As for AVG, you may need to download the latest version of AVG Free Edition.

2008-01-26 03:15:00 | apparently that has happened to a number of people. manualy updating (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) those ones seems to have worked for most (use custom update and choose those 2 that didnt update correctly)

2008-01-26 11:55:00 | Cheers for all that. Speedy,I'll look into Avast.Read a few good reports on it. lakewoodlady, running XP Home SP2,validated,fresh install 2-3 weeks back.kosher.just installed WMP 11 bevy121;I have been trying to install them as you suggest.Still won't go.maybe tomorrow they will....(?) beeswax34;Avast eh,ok,I'll download it & give it a trial-run.As for that CCleaner, had that & I found that I was a few necessary files missing to make com work proper, something it seems to not do anyway!!Probably coz I didn't read the instructions thoroughly 1st.& that Comodo firewall, tried it 3 weeks back and got the hump clicking 'accept' 73 times to install a program in train mode. chuckle but it's true. Finally, before thanks, investigated AVG prob at their support pages & at their advice I checked 'Date/Time Settings'.Yep.sure enough wrong.Somehow it had reset to November.Sorted that & update leapt in no prob. Unfortunately the same not happening with MS Updates.I've checked their site to no avail, thus far. Thanks & cheers to you all.

2008-01-26 12:14:00 | Just had a thought:-why is MS update trying to load 'Windows Media Format 11 Runtime' when in 'Add/Remove Programs',it's already installed? I decided to go uninstall it & received message from Windows Media Configuration Manager stating that 'Windows Media Setup is already running'. OK, I'll shut down to let WMP11 finish installing & come back to try removing WMF11 again.I thought MS updates couldn't be removed once installed.Anyway,it's worth a try. cioa for now

2008-01-26 12:33:00 | Well, that was a faux pas. WMP11 is dependent on MFR11.(you knew that,I didn't),till now.Wants to rollback to WMP 9. Leave it as it is for the mo. Next! a 'Spybot Search & Destroy' hunt for an ensconced malicious tool. Learn something new every day cya
