634663 2008-01-29 06:50:00 I've had good experiences with Dell - battery life is excellent if you choose the right model. My 14.1" Inspiron 640m laptop gets 5-6hrs per battery under "normal" real-life use (wifi on, word processing/internet/email etc.).

If you're willing to spend a bit more, their XPS M1330s are quite nice.

634665 2008-01-29 18:48:00 Id seriously take another look at the EeePC, or perhaps the option of an external display / keyboard for while at home using it.

I bought mine with Uni this year in mind, and the 3.5 hour battery life while using Wireless is realistic! Not to mention Asus are bringing out batteries with a longer life-expectancy (Around 5 1/2 hours I believe) so that could be worth looking into also.
At less than 1KG, and for $599, you cant go too wrong :D See the review in the latest PCW Mag perhaps?

634666 2008-01-30 06:52:00 I know the EEE is really tempting I got so close to buying one, its just the keyboard seems to small to use relatively accurately and quickly, for a decent amount of time. stormdragon (6013)
634667 2008-01-30 07:12:00 I suggest an IBM (Lenovo) Thinkpad. R61 4 - 6 hours battery life (depending on settings), 15.4 non refective screen, XP Pro, 80 gig, DVD RW, 1 gig ram, 80 gig HDD, bag, optical mouse.
I have sold dozens of them over the last couple of years and NEVER had any returned with faults. price is about $1200 - $1300.00. Another production run is under way now and stocks are only a week or so off. I sold 3 last week that were built in china on 27/12/007 so they are NOT old stock.

They are also tough little blighters that take a bit of punishment. Many govt, depts use them as well!

Hi Guy's

I'm currently looking at buying a new laptop for Uni.

Couple of specs:
Battery must last at least 3hrs when doing simple word processing longer the better.
Screen must be 14" or less to keep weight down.
Cost less then $1500 the lower the better.
At least 1GB of RAM.

Don't care if its running Vista or XP.

Not an Acer!!!

Am open to any suggestions.

Thanks

In my limited experience with one of these (about 2 hours), I haven't found the keyboard too bad at all, and that's cow cockie's fingers.
Although, if you're a better typist than me, and I'll bet that's the case then maybe you'd notice it.

634669 2008-02-02 05:15:00 Hi stormdragon,
I'm in the same 'laptop for uni' situation as you at the moment, I'm going my last year in computer science. I'll give you my thought process so far.....

Until I went to work today I was set on getting an eee at next payday. The thing is SO small and light, no hassle to carry and you could fit it on a lecture theater 'desk' at uni (not sure how big AUT ones are but mine are cramped). From what I hear the battery life is around 3.5 hours epically if you have WiFi off. Despite what some might say I really doubt you will need a fast processor for computer science, the most demanding thing you might use is Visual Studio (if you're unlucky). Most of y course has been c/c++/java/php etc using a basic editor.

I think that the eee is a fantastic little machine, but I'm going to have to wait until the next revision, here's why....

The thing that has changed my mind is the Z99He, its $899 at DSE at the moment which is $200 off the previous price and $400 off of the pre-christmas price. For a core2 duo, 14" screen and 1gb RAM its a steal (epically an ASUS). The only thing I'm not sure about is how the battery life will be, my guess would be about 2.5 hours. (I'd love to know if someone has one). The downside is of course the size and weight compared to the eee.

It has vista which as many know has very poor power saving features but! ASUS now has drives available for all the components of the Z99he under XP. And seeing as your a computer science guy, you just have to slap linux on there, go oooon you know you want to.

Thats my :2cents: feel free to change my mind before I buy one :D

634670 2008-02-02 06:03:00 cold_fusion I've been looking at the Z99he also. However after searching the Asus website have been unable to find any information only drivers, when conducting a simple Google search for information the majority of the results appear to be in some foreign language. I to would love to know what the battery life is like. stormdragon (6013)
634671 2008-02-02 06:22:00 cold_fusion another thing I've just come across that may or may not matter to you is the fact the spare batteries appear to be very hard to come by. stormdragon (6013)
634672 2008-02-02 06:45:00 They are available on the ASUS site, I know what you mean about all infomation being in forien language, a lot of it Russian by the looks of it. ASUS has so many notebooks active in their range (they do OEM too) that it's not really surprising that they can ship a model to a select few countries.

support.asus.com

Select notebook from the product drop-down menu, then Z99 series, then Z99He.

The battery can probably be ordered as a spare part directly from ASUS although the cost will be significant. Any laptops battery will fail, by this I mean its life will decrease to the point where it is no longer usable as a portable PC. When this happens I intend to by a(n)? eee :)
