635154 2008-01-29 21:45:00 I ordered a hard drive late december and it arrived early Jan (about 7th). It was faulty, so I got an RMA number and returned it to them. They received it on the 14th Jan. They confirmed it was faulty and said they expected to have a replacement available for me last monday/tuesday (21st Jan) and said they would let me know when it was sent down.

I haven't heard anything since and they haven't responded to my last email (sent on 28th, monday this week).

How long does a typical RMA take to complete? Should I start pushing for more and sending more emails, ringing etc, or is 1-2 weeks common? I've never had to complete an RMA before so...

635155 2008-01-29 21:52:00 Depends who is doing the RMA, 1-2 weeks from a shop ( if thats where you purchased it) is not uncommon, What they may do is they would have to get it from you, send it back to the suppliers, the suppliers replace it if its faulty, send it back to the shop - then the shop sends it back to you.

This is also if the Suppliers have stock to replace with, and the workload to test. Suppliers usually will test the component unless its obviously faulty.

If you are a business, and get directly from vendors, it can be over night, or a week. Just did a Mobo as a RMA about 2 weeks ago- took 4 days from the day I sent it back to the courier delivering a replacement.

So 1 day from wgtn > Auck , 2 days it took to check/replace, 1 day Auck> wgtn return.

Also did a HD myself - Rang got the RMA number yesterday morning, sent it yesterday, they replaced it even before the old one had arrived. - Turned up this morning.

Monday being a holiday in Auck, meant they sent it first thing Tuesday morning. The damaged one should arrive in Auck today.

635156 2008-01-29 22:02:00 Shouldn't be more than a week. pctek (84)
635157 2008-01-29 23:18:00 Who did you buy it from? FoxyMX (5)
635158 2008-01-29 23:50:00 playtech. They weren't the cheapest, but apparently they have good service according to some people who bought from them. utopian201 (6245)
635159 2008-01-30 00:07:00 They normally do, give them a ring and ask whats the delay. pctek (84)
635160 2008-01-30 01:49:00 HD RMA's are pretty speedy in my experience(seagate)

on other stuff....
Ive seen a RMA's take 3+ months from one of our suppliers.
Problem is, it gets sent to the local auth repair centre & they may be waiting
months for parts or a suitable replacement.
Same thing when I was doing outsourced printer warranty repairs. Parts shipments sometimes took anywhere from 1-3 months, assuming parts were available. No excuse for this. Parts can be sent anywhere in the world within a few days.

635161 2008-01-30 02:14:00 If you are trading as a dealer and return product to your supplier they can basically take as long as they like and use whatever methods are specified in their terms of trade, provided you will accept being jerked around.

If buying as a consumer, the CGA comes into play and the seller must replace or refund within a consumer-realistic time frame, which broadly speaking shouldn't exceed 14 days but expectation would be <7.

Consumers don't have to wait while faulty products are shipped to and fro for fault/liability verification etc, they get a prompt replacement or their money back. That requirement applies to PF1 members who are selling to end-user consumers as well by the way.

Sellers can't opt out of the CGA by means of their terms of trade or any other conditions the devious (read Super Cheap) try to impose.

Never does any harm to remind people of this, it is amazing the crap some people will put up with when they don't know their rights.

Cheers

635162 2008-01-30 03:48:00 I called and the reason they said was because their supplier doesnt carry this item, and it has to be shipped from overseas. Fair enough I guess...

I had a feeling 750gb *IDE* drives were starting to get rare, but I didnt realise -that- rare. I guess IDE phase out has already begun.
