In terms of using a disk, my approach was using the "head unit" from an external hard disk, and a friend's DVD drive out of his PC.

635423 2008-02-01 06:54:00 I was getting progressively keener on buying one (Chilling Silence's recommendation in another thread was the crunch)
And then when my local Dick Smith got new stock, I did the money-shuffling... all set.

And THEN I was brought down to earth with a crash - by something that had never occurred to me.
The thing that none of you experts never think to mention is that some of us late-learners can have blank spots in our technical knowledge...

... like Eee has no modem.
So it doesn't work on Dialup.

There are reasons -too long to go into - why I can't shift to broadband at present.
So I am really really really disappointed now.
Uncouth language has been spoken to the walls...

(If by some miracle, there's a workaround that doesn't cost an arm & leg, I'm all ears)

635425 2008-02-01 07:40:00 Hey, thanks for that, metla.

Definitely worth doing some sums to look for the cash stretch.
The only thing I can see wrong with it is Vista (Have an XP disk, though).

Some heavy thinking coming up...

P.S. Which retailer?

635426 2008-02-01 07:40:00 Thanks for that  - So if you don't have a LAN or own a external drive, you need to go purchase one - More $$, :groan:

Please excuse the curious nature of this - but being a tech myself - Why have you had to revert it back to factory condition many times?:D

Haha knew this would come up.
Well i tried to dual boot with Linux and XP on a External HDD.
Well after a few days (And some trial and error) , i managed to actually manage it.

Its DSE.

I'd put Linux on it.

Even my wife who has zero interest in the PC itself has no trouble using it for everything she wants to do.

But the updates are large....But then, Tiny in comparison to an MS OS....

635428 2008-02-01 20:05:00 Solution #1: Mash the F9 button repeatedly as it boot and you'll be taken to another bootload where you press "Restore to factory settings". A minute later, its back how it was when you first purchased it! :)

Solution #2: External 56K Modem :D Almost all work these days without any tweaking, although you will possibly need to download & install a couple of extra software programs in order to actually "Dial-Up" on the Eee (It didnt include the usual dialler software because of no internal modem..)

Thou that Compaq that Metla mentioned may be a little more ideal in your case if it comes with a Dial-Up Modem already built-in...

635429 2008-02-01 21:25:00 It is the size and weight that appeal to me. Trying to trundle my excellent HP laptop around is just too much hard labour. And that seems to be the problem with other competitive low priced laptops.
But I am puzzled by the references to running XP. I like XP and both my desktop and laptop run it. But I didn't get any installation disks with either - so I cannot install XP on an Asus eee PC if I bought one. (Don't see any legal reason why not - I have paid for 2 copies and am the ONLY person who will use it).
Asking the local computer shops they all tell me that XP comes installed(or Vista) and no disks are supplied. But every week hundreds of computers are scrapped. Surely the disks for these should be made available?
So assuming I bought an eee how do I get XP to run on it.

:D you gotta ask these things - Who knows you may have discovered a bug that no one else had.
We all like to "Fiddle" sometimes - sometimes it works other times you go OOPS ! wont do that again;)

Thanks.

Tom

I just asked someone for a copy of their XP CD, and just used a XP Serial key from one of my old PCs.
That was fine.
Only thing is when you run XP on the Eee PC you start to notice how great the linux OS is afterwards. (After i spent an hour trying to find my wireless router ...)
