634990 2008-02-02 20:27:00 well low or flat BIOS batteries can cause all sorts of issues (I've looked at several PCs that won't even bootup when the battery is flat/removed)

They're so cheap it's probably worth getting a new one anyway considering the age of your motherboard.

634991 2008-02-02 21:30:00 Hey, thanks - I'll be buying a new one from the shop today.

- When I put in my quake 2 cd (which works etc and I know it's an EXTREMELY old game) but anyway, it came up with a dialog box showing all this stuff about graphics etc and whether or not it is installed or certified, and next to Direct3d (tm) it has a 'not installed' line next to it.
Anything to worry about? or maybe it cannot detect a newer version

634992 2008-02-02 22:04:00 Likely your current version is too new for it to detect, though have you tried running dxdiag to see if there are any reported problems? Agent_24 (57)
634993 2008-02-02 22:42:00 Yea that's what I'm hoping :)
Dxdiag shows no errors.

Grr I want to play Halo - mod it - then move onto Battlefield

Thanks

634994 2008-02-04 02:31:00 Hmmm - The error just happened again (trying a few new things)
But when it restarted most of my firefox bookmarks had disappeared, and showed the 'first start' page.

- Oh, another note - Halo trial works perfect.

Thanks

634995 2008-02-04 04:49:00 What caused it to happen again? Agent_24 (57)
634996 2008-02-04 07:19:00 Thanks for the reply,
Trying to play battlefield made it restart - nothing new though.

I replaced the BIOS battery with a new one, and just tried it, but hasn't seemed to have changed anything.

Thanks

634997 2008-02-05 06:12:00 Sorry - had to flick through quickly so not sure if someone's already covered this:

You say that BF1942 and Halo aren't working, but Unreal Tournament is. I understand that UT uses a different system for rendering graphics - is it Open GL? I forget - compared to those other two games, which run Direct X. That would suggest to me that maybe one of your Direct X drivers has gone scoo-whif...

Hope that might help.

634998 2008-02-05 23:04:00 Ohhh, thanks for the advice!
Does anyone know if there is a certain download that updates OpenGL?
And by my understanding, DirectX can't uninstall - am I right?

Thanks for the help!
Curbd (13334)
634999 2008-02-06 03:39:00 I think (and may be wrong) that OpenGL is more part of your games/video drivers, when directX is part of windows. As such I don't beleive you can download separate updates for openGL, you just update your video card drivers...

But if you want to update your directX - download this program: download.microsoft.com (~250KB) it will download and install only the components nessecary for you to update your directX to the latest version.

If you don't want to do that, you can download the full installer www.microsoft.com (64MB)

It may also be worth updating your motherboard/video/sound drivers:

For that, uninstall your current drivers for all 3, then install, in this order:

Motherboard: www.viaarena.com
Video Card: download.nvidia.com
Sound: ftp://202.65.194.211/pc/audio/WDM_A404.exe
