635507 2008-01-30 10:23:00 I bet the DMA has downgraded, I would be checking that once it finally boots up. Once thats fixed reset. Then boot it up and Nuke Nortons. apsattv (7406)
635508 2008-01-30 10:26:00 I run more then one network
one has Nortons - the slowest but not bad
Mcfee - good protection, light foot print
but the fastest of the lot is Avast , cheapest to
All work fine all stuff up, reload what ever BUT get more RAM!

635509 2008-01-30 10:29:00 i agree avast is quite good i run it at home maybe you should try a diffrent virus shield/scanner/protecter or maybe your system isnt compatible with norton? IllegalCharacter (1949)
635510 2008-01-30 10:36:00 to put it in a simple awnser its probably the hard drive and the ram Ie is taking 57 mb's itself! norton doesnt load when your booting try buying more ram getting a new Hd or Maybe even updating windows though Norton may be a problem when actually running IllegalCharacter (1949)
635511 2008-01-30 10:40:00 It's a client's PC. I can't switch AVs without asking first, and I'd rather not go there yet.

The hard drive tested fine. Nothing is loading that isn't related to NIS, so I'm going to disable that and see what happens.

635512 2008-01-30 10:40:00 Nortons integrates itself through the entire file structure, adds a bunch of services into the windows shell and another bunch of crap into the startup.

Shes definitely loading itself when Windows is booting.

And the hard drive is about the least likely suspect.

I was going to suggest that, but if it has NIS on it it's very likely it's Norton rather than a DMA problem

635514 2008-01-30 10:46:00 More RAM won't help - it's got 90MB physically free once everything is loaded. I'm not sure about the hard drive - it seems to have no physical faults. george12 (7)
635515 2008-01-30 10:53:00 Test the HDD as much as you like, have you tried disabling norton yet? (and make sure you do it properly with msconfig so nothing norton loads) Agent_24 (57)
635516 2008-01-30 11:03:00 Will do so in the morning.

It's time to get some sleep.

Goodnight PF1 - thanks for your help everyone.
