635412 2008-01-31 18:17:00 You can throw a touchscreen on them quite easily too, tempted to do that myself :D

jcr1: Im happy with Xandros too.. installed the updates so the latest Skype Beta uses the Webcam, and VideoLAN Client plays my h.264 videos, so all is good :)

I haven't used Xandros before, Chill, but imo it does what I'd expect any OS to do in a machine like this:thumbs:
I got a link from my son in the Uk (his comment when I told him I'd bought one was, "cool")

beta.ivancover.com

Those are pretty serious hacks:eek:

635413 2008-01-31 19:50:00 fyi there's an article about the Asus eee desktop PC announced yesterday in our Top Stories section here (pcworld.co.nz). We called the local distributor, but they had no idea about it. Chris Keall (10417)
635414 2008-01-31 20:03:00 If you check eeeuser.com they have a short article about Asus profits.. could be a good company to have some shares in right about now ;)

Also, EeePC Accessories: www.eeeuser.com

And yup, some of those would require you to be pretty onto-it with a soldering iron, unfortunately I am now, however I have pulled mine to pieces to photograph the insides for different purposes, all in the name of science :D

635415 2008-01-31 20:23:00 One question and its a legit question - while it looks OK for what it is, what do you get in the way of recovery software for when it all turns bad and you need to reinstall the OS ?

So far I have seen nothing saying whats available, maybe some one who has one can shred some answer on this please ?

635416 2008-01-31 20:55:00 Bit slow? You've gotta be kidding me!

Even at 630MHz, these things still fly a hell of a lot faster than most windows desktops! No exaggeration either! When I went into PCW Headquarters with mine prior to Christmas, they didnt even know that they came factory default at 630MHz (Underclocked -- Yes, every single EeePC does!), which is why you'll notice that Jan wrote the article on the side, while another writer did the main article..

You can buy large 16GB SDHC cards, but they're not entirely reliable, not all SDHC cards work perfectly. If you can, get a thumbdrive, or stick with a 2GB SD-card... unless you're carrying around a buttload of movies thou, the 1.4GB you're left with in free space is MORE than sufficient for anything.
You can do a network install of Microsoft Office if you wanted to, chuck the CD-Rom drive in another machine, share it across your LAN, and you can install it just fine :)

Robust? This things been pushed / pulled / thrown off the dining room tale a few times and its still in perfect condition! No scratches, bumps, bruises, its 100%!!

Even with only 512MB Ram, no lies, you can load this thing up to the max (In Linux at least -- havent played with XP except for a few minutes on the one Jan was reviewing) with applications playing videos, tons of firefox tabs open, OpenOffice Writer, Adobe Reader, Skype, MSN, the works.. and no LAG!

Good on ya jcr1, welcome to the revolution ;)

As for purchasing online, try DSE.co.nz
Apparently DSE have no intention of bringing in the 8G models in the near future, just the black / white 4G models :)

Uh, she is still low spec (don't get me wrong, It looks to be perfect for its intended niche) But I'd still be more inclined to spend a tiny $150 more (going by the DSE brochure) and get a laptop with an 80GB hard drive, DVD writer, 1GB ram, 14.1" screen...

etc. etc etc.

and just install Linux on her.

Even if it were for a kid.

You get a support CD that you can basically revert it back to factory condition in terms of software etc.
I have used it many times :P
But you do need an external CD drive for it, or network it as previously said.

Please excuse the curious nature of this - but being a tech myself - Why have you had to revert it back to factory condition many times?:D

Im going to have a guess, and say its because under the hood Linux is freakin impossible to make any sense of.And if you break it, (real easy to do, just find something that doesn't work) you might as well cut to the chase and re-install it.

There's an OS recovery partition on the SSD so you don't need the recovery DVD unless you've reformatted the SSD and/or installed another OS.

Click on this link (jkontherun.blogs.com)for an article and video, showing how quick and easy it is to restore the OS from the hidden partition.

I find my eee pc particularly good for wirelessly skyping, or updating facebook while I'm watching the telly. I will take it on holiday for transfering photos off memory cards.
They are very robust, but ymmv.
