635402 2008-01-30 23:35:00 I condsidered getting one, But decided against it based on the fact that for $250 extra I could get a laptop loaded with all the bells and whistles, and simply install linux.....

Right. I'd considered that too, but the size of the device was what decided it for me.
Maybe a bit gimmicky:confused: But so far I like it.

635403 2008-01-30 23:57:00 Just a bit of info - Dont want to be a "Stick in the Mud" but just talking to Morning Star - Asus importers, and was advised that in a month or so they should have the Eee PC 8G - 8Gb Drive, 1 Gb RAM.

More space and speed.

635404 2008-01-31 03:53:00 Bit slow? You've gotta be kidding me!

Even at 630MHz, these things still fly a hell of a lot faster than most windows desktops! No exaggeration either! When I went into PCW Headquarters with mine prior to Christmas, they didnt even know that they came factory default at 630MHz (Underclocked -- Yes, every single EeePC does!), which is why you'll notice that Jan wrote the article on the side, while another writer did the main article..

You can buy large 16GB SDHC cards, but they're not entirely reliable, not all SDHC cards work perfectly. If you can, get a thumbdrive, or stick with a 2GB SD-card... unless you're carrying around a buttload of movies thou, the 1.4GB you're left with in free space is MORE than sufficient for anything.
You can do a network install of Microsoft Office if you wanted to, chuck the CD-Rom drive in another machine, share it across your LAN, and you can install it just fine :)

Robust? This things been pushed / pulled / thrown off the dining room tale a few times and its still in perfect condition! No scratches, bumps, bruises, its 100%!!

Even with only 512MB Ram, no lies, you can load this thing up to the max (In Linux at least -- havent played with XP except for a few minutes on the one Jan was reviewing) with applications playing videos, tons of firefox tabs open, OpenOffice Writer, Adobe Reader, Skype, MSN, the works.. and no LAG!

Good on ya jcr1, welcome to the revolution ;)

As for purchasing online, try DSE.co.nz
Apparently DSE have no intention of bringing in the 8G models in the near future, just the black / white 4G models :)

635405 2008-01-31 04:01:00 Have to agree with Chilling Silence.
When i had my Eee PC its was GREAT!
Loaded Linux in less than 20s, did 90% of what i wanted (The other 10% was gaming, which is why i returned mine for a ausu laptop, and in some ways regret it)
When i installed an N-lited version of XP on it, loaded it in 10s.
It is definitely a great piece of work, and cannot commend it enough.
The screen is small, but over time you dont notice it.

After you unlock a few goodies in linux like the Full Desktop, you really start to enjoy it.

If i could trade back my Laptop for an 8Gb Eee PC, i would.

635406 2008-01-31 04:16:00 Yeah dont get me wrong, an extra few GB would be nice to keep a movie or two on here.. but I have a 2GB SD-card which does just fine ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
635407 2008-01-31 04:17:00 Thanks for all the feedback people. Overwhelmingly most of it positive too:D

DSE didn't have any white ones, so I settled for black; but that's alright, doesn't show the grime so easily.
I don't think I'll even think about installing XP, as I think it'll perform better with linux and I don't mind using linux at all. Another thing, as it is, it interacts with my network without a problem.

635408 2008-01-31 04:21:00 I'll have to find someone who has one so I can comandeer it for a little while. Read that article about hacking the USB port and upping SSD to 16gig... laughed and proceeded as normal. I think I'll wait a little before I get one. Maybe they'll find a way to fit a slightly bigger screen into it (relocate/trim/find smaller speakers). But I'm really excited by it. Linux has me lost so I think I'd stay with XP. SD card would be a media drive... unreliable how?
Or maybe I'm just asking too much from a laptop that isn't really a laptop. More a kneetop.

635409 2008-01-31 04:32:00 And if you do decide to get a SDHC card higher than 4 GB, This may help (www.microsoft.com)

Just came out over a week ago.

635410 2008-01-31 04:48:00 How can you be confused with an interface like this:
www.honeypothack.com
They call it the "Simple" interface for a reason ;)

Anyways, its something to do with the physical hardware in the EeePC Speedy, it affects Linux also.

You can throw a touchscreen on them quite easily too, tempted to do that myself :D

jcr1: Im happy with Xandros too.. installed the updates so the latest Skype Beta uses the Webcam, and VideoLAN Client plays my h.264 videos, so all is good :)

It's not worth it though. I was overseas in December when I bought mine (just the normal 4G black one), and price wise, you could buy a 4G Eee + 4GB SD Card + 1GB RAM for less than the price of an 8G EeePC.

I've currently got a 4GB high-speed SDHC card in mine, which gives me plenty of space for storage. I also have a nLited version of XP running on it with Office 2007, and it runs perfectly fine - surprisingly fast and snappy, with only 512mb of RAM.

For those who are concerned about screen size, Asus is bringing out larger screen sizes (8" and 9" screens) later on this year.
