636265 2008-02-01 10:11:00 My niece (who knows little about computers) bought a new Dell about a year ago, but has never had it running properly because she doesn't know enough to set it up correctly. It came with Win XP and a demo version of MS Office 2003 (plus Works and a bit of other stuff) which has long since expired. She is now a solo mum, with few shekels to shake together, and I am helping to get her system sorted out.
I have learned of the availability, from an IT guy who is having a clearout of his firm's old computer stuff, of an unused complete copy of Office 97 for $30. This is a bargain but the big question is - will Office 97 run without problems under Win XP? The IT guy thinks that it does work, with the possible exception of Access (which my niece is unlikely to ever use).

Soooooooo ... can anyone confirm or negate?

TIA.

636266 2008-02-01 10:20:00 Loaded office 97 on many XP Computers with no worries.

The only thing that does sometimes happen is if some one sends you a document or other 2003-2007 file, Office 97 may not read it correctly or at all , if it has anything apart from standard text, as 97 doesn't know what it is.

To get around this you can download for free from MS a reader Word 2003 reader (www.microsoft.com). It allows you to read/print but not edit. Down the bottom of that linked page are other viewers if required.

Yes, it runs fine on one of my PCs .

That version of Office includes Publisher which will not be able to view files created by a later version of Publisher . I'm not sure about the other apps, they may or may not be able to open docs created by later versions . That would be the only issue .

Word 97 will read a Word 2003 file just fine. You'll need to get the Word 2007 Viewer to open Word 2007 documents (.docx format)

Access will work (from my experiences)

636273 2008-02-02 21:43:00 Thanks for the helpful replies, folks. It would seem that grabbing the Office 97 deal would be her best bet. I had thought about Open Office, but since it can have some compatibility issues, and she is a beginner, it could cause some problems she could do without.

Wainuitech and jwil1 - thanks for the alerts about Word 2003 and 2007 Readers. I knew there are earlier versions, and some for Excel as well.

Foxy - that version of 97 Pro does not contain Publisher (which is worth having) - maybe it was in the SBE or academic versions.
