635769 2008-01-31 01:39:00 Hi all, my flatmate has just purchased a 7900GS but his PSU doesn't have a 6-pin PCI-E power connector. I know you can get an adapter that is molex to the 6-pin pci-e, I've tried a couple of computer sites and dse but can't find it, does anyone know where i can get one from?

Cheers

635771 2008-01-31 01:44:00 hmm, didn't think to look on trademe lol. cheers wratterus. any other places that might be cheaper? $18 seems a bit expensive for an adapter mOOseCaNNoN (13319)
635772 2008-01-31 01:47:00 Not really sorry, they aren't cheap, or easy to get hold of. How powerful is your mates PSU? Often if the PSU doesn't come with the correect cables, it will struggle to run a graphics card such as the 7900.

In the long run it may be better to get a new PSU.

635773 2008-01-31 01:54:00 I'm not sure how many watts his psu is, i'll have a look and maybe suggest to him to get a new one. i found one slightly cheaper at overclockers.co.nz but you're right they're not very common therefore not as cheap as chips!

cheers

635774 2008-01-31 01:56:00 No worries...Power requirements for a 7900GS 256mb are minimum of 22A on the +12v rail, amperage is far more important than the wattage, go for a 450W minimum (more like 500W, esp if running lots of fans, hdds etc) with at least 22A on the +12v rail. wratterus (105)
635775 2008-01-31 01:59:00 They usually come with all new PCIE cards that require the extra power. Did your mate purchase the 7900GS second hand? Have you asked the seller if he still has the cable? qazwsxokmijn (102)
635776 2008-01-31 02:09:00 they do? no i haven't asked the seller (yes it was second hand). I will ask him, if not I'm sure he wont be fussed parting with $15 for a new one.

ta :)

635777 2008-01-31 03:52:00 That was a good point qazwsxokmijn made, it would be worth checking. Save a few $$.

Although I still reckon a new PSU is probably the way to go.
