635764 2008-01-30 23:34:00 When I try to play a DVD on a laptop I have here (a client's laptop, his problem not mine), the video is smooth but the sound is grainy and skips. I have tried upgrading the sound drivers (there has been no later version released), and tried re-installing them. No luck.

CPU usage while playing is about 75 - 90%. It doesn't ever hit 100%. It has around 60MB of RAM physically free while playing (384MB RAM total).

DMA is enabled on the DVD drive, however it is running in PIO mode anyway (perhaps this is the problem?). The HDD is running in DMA mode as it should.

Any suggestons?

635765 2008-01-30 23:47:00 Yeah probably is part of the problem.

In the device manager, uninstall the drive, and uninstall the secondary controller. Reboot. See if thats any better. Should enable DMA properly again.

Which program are you trying to play it in? If it's WMP, update it to at least version 10 if it isn't already, and also chuck k-lite codex on there.

That will be the problem.

Try this (svp.co.uk)

It happens when the drive tries to read a scratched or dirty disc. If windows can't read the disc in DMA mode it slows the drive down to PIO but doesn't set it back to DMA once it has finished.

635767 2008-01-31 00:32:00 Well, that's something I certainly didn't know.

Uninstalling the IDE controller fixed it beautifully. Thanks you two.
