309633 2005-01-01 22:36:00 Greetings ladies,fans and apostles.

Just thought i would show a youngster how to build and publish their first website, Whipped off to Orcon to discover their link to free hosting goes to an error page, Checked out Brinkster and they only seem to have kilt their free service.

Google brings up a multitude of scams,non-eglish sites,dead-ends and general malarkey.

So, anyone know of some free web hosting,in english,That isn't designed to not let you have the promised service, with ftp access?

5mb will be plenty, and the odd banner or popup is acceptable, (as long as it isn't gain or other such nasties)

Thanks in advance.

309634 2005-01-02 00:40:00 http://free.hostdepartment.com/ - That one could possibly do, but are you looking for a subdomain?

I must say, the age of decent, honest, free web hosting is fading :(

How much traffic will there be, and what is the site for?

If there won't be very many big downloads, and less than 100mb or so traffic then I would host a *.jgi.co.nz or *.jgih.com for free.

I think the Orcon one went because of the big problems they were having. But not to worry. Just drop an e-mail to acboler [a]t orcon [do]t net [do]t nz, and he can set one up with no ads, subdomain, and ample space and bandwidth :)

309636 2005-01-02 01:46:00 If said kid has an ISP account (or parents with one) they should have free hosting included with their dialup access.

It's hit and miss as to whether they have FTP or a Web interface, but it'd be a good start.

309637 2005-01-02 02:00:00 000k.com (www.000k.com). Lots of space, databases, forums, photo albums, ftp, php, password protectable folders - almost anything you could want. NO ads, has been very reliable (I've only had downtime once, which they resolved and contacted their customers to explain why and to apologise etc. - even their non-paying customers like myself). You name it they've probably got it available in their standard free package.

Metla - can't understand what's with Orcon's free hosting, but I have a site on Portland (www.portland.co.uk) - it's very good, 15MB, no ads, FTP access. Only restriction is low monthly bandwidth (100MB) but should be perfect for your requirements. Also supports proper domain names.

I asked them a couple of weeks ago what the story was and they said it was only temporary while they did some changes to their servers/system or whatever. They said their free hosting will be back but there was no indication of when.

In January 2005 I think they'll allow more free signups. The current free ones are working fine at the moment.
