636430 2008-02-02 00:41:00 I've just installed a Belkin wireless router (MIMO or something and there's a G also somewhere) on my BB and it is working beautifully. The only problem is that SWMBO has decided I can't bugger around on her lappie to see why her school lappie version of IE7 does not want to open or work - it gives the "page can not be displayed" message. Wireless router is there, connected, no probs. Any easy suggestions? Things I can do that she won't notice - last time I effed up the IE7 quite well (and don't ask me what I did, can't remember).

She runs XP, IE7, typical school laptop. She uses the lappie at school via wireless as well.

636431 2008-02-02 01:12:00 Check to see if the firewall is set to allow the IP Address of the router through. If using widows Firewall, turn it off. Control Panel/Windows Firewall wainuitech (129)
636432 2008-02-02 04:05:00 Ok thanks Wanuitech, have to wait until she's gone - another quick one - I tested my router throug the GRC site - it found port 0 open, as well as 113 (?). The rest stealthed. This a problem? I do run Comodo Firewall - perhaps I still need it (to check inside-to-outside packets?)

636433 2008-02-02 04:08:00 113 is the Ident port. Are you in something like IRC?

This uses it.

I wouldnt worry about those ports.

Is the latest version of Comodo installed?

636435 2008-02-02 18:38:00 For school use TCP/IP in Control pane/network connections/wireless connection may be set to a specific IP or DNS
If you change it to obtain IP and DNS automatically make sure you note what is there so you can add it back in again.

You could also try connecting the laptop by ethernet to see if that works to make sure that there is not some other problem on the computer that is not related to the wireless settings.

636436 2008-02-02 20:21:00 I think Safari's got it -- the school will almost definitely have a proxy server that you can't see from outside the school network. I set up our school laptops with two registry files on the desktop -- "Internet at Home" and "Internet at School" which alter the TCP/IP settings to the required settings, meaning it's a no-brainer to switch between environments. davehartley (3487)
636437 2008-02-27 18:51:00 Hi guys

SWMBO just had to untick the box about something acting as server and away she went. XP, 2.something Ghz, enough RAM.

Two further questions : As you guys know, I suffered for long with disconnects of my Xtra modem. With the router things seem to be better (ran 50 hrs without a disconnect) but I have a few problems :

I play on-line poker ever so often (free play). Ever so often I would get these "micro-freezes" (every 5 minutes or so), not be totally disconnected, just a bit of lag (?). I don't know what cause this - anybody got any ideas? It happens on more than one pokersite as well.
SWMBO is having problems running Skype off the lappie (wireless) - the same thing it seems to me, the sound going away and then be back to normal after a while.

I've looked around at the settings on the modem and router but I really do not know what I'm looking at - all Greek to me.

I also emailed the Xtra modem makers (D-link) and asked for a firmware upgrade. Got it, but they said the modem is frickin old (on the point of not getting any more support). My questions : will Xtra replace it or do you have to buy a new one and secondly, I'm worried stiff about installing the firmware upgrade after reading about the problems with it on this forum (and others). Any-one also with similar problems (a 3-4 year old modem from Xtra?)

Well, that's me for now. Hope you Ubergeeks can help this poor stupid *rseh*le.

LOL

636438 2008-02-27 21:19:00 Another thing of interest - SWMBO's current lappie is a Toshiba. She went to a big teacher conference last week in Rotorua, and as she knows the lappie must be replaced this year decided that she will go for a Mac - she had the opportunity to play with one there and decided she liked what she saw. It must also be said that her biggest friend also has a Mac. So look out for future posts from me about Mac's, and Mac/XP conflicts. *Sigh* they never make it easy, do they?
