635697	2008-01-30 22:12:00	Hi everyone Just wanting some advise on RAID options for a machine im putting together. Im wanting to use it for some development work I do in house, plus it will host Exchange/SQL server etc. Was looking at doing Raid1 for the OS and RAID 5 for the Data, but just want to clarify teh hardware aspect of achieving this. A lot of Cards say they are Dual Channel ... I presume this is what is required to run two RAID arrays on a single machine. But, a lot say that one channel is for internal drives and the other for external ... does this mean if you have a 2RU machine with 6 disks ... you cant say have 2 for the RAID1 and 4 for RAID5, but instead would need an external enclosure for the second channel? Any advise on how to achieve this would be great. My reasoning, which may be right off the wall, is that the OS benefits speed wise form RAID1, whereas the data components are served better from RAID5.	thekiwi (13345)
635698	2008-01-30 22:58:00	Hi mate, do you know what the controller model is and I will have a look for you. As a small note the SQL log files would perform better on the mirror rather than the Radi 5 array, and the raid 5 takes longer to write.	SolMiester (139)

Hi there Just using a Smart Array 5i Plus in a DL380 Yea, had read that about the Log files ... so was going to place Logs on the Mirror. From what I understand of the HP servers back then, its a Single/dual channel backplane thus its possible to enable the 6 internal SCSI drives to run on 1 or 2 channels ... ?	thekiwi (13345)

635702	2008-01-31 04:05:00	Better still, I think you are getting confused with ports and channels, you could have 2 separate cables to separate arrays, 1 internal, 1 external however you have a total of 2 channels or arrays. I the controller is connected to the backbone with all 6 bays, you only need 1 port (internal)	SolMiester (139)
