637326 2008-02-04 06:55:00 A few years ago I started playing Half Life 2 on my PC but gave up due to finding the Steam engine to be a pain in the proverbial. I want to start playing it again and have updated my graphics drivers to the latest version for the nVidia GeForce FX5200XT graphics card and updated the game through the Steam engine.

The problem is that the game still tells me to update my graphics card drivers and won't play properly if I just ignore the warning. It should work fine because it used to when I first played it on my PC.

Does anybody know why the game won't work now when it used be ok?

Thanks :help:

637327 2008-02-06 08:34:00 I'm not familiar with HL2 or steam, so I will bump this thread to see if anyone else has a suggestion. Jen (38)
637328 2008-02-06 08:42:00 Yeah, you're gonna have problems running this game with the 5200 series. I remember in 2005 when I was using a 5200. I had alot of slowdown. Could you please explain you're problem =) CaptainVincent (76)

637330 2008-02-06 19:00:00 Hi

The game just doesn't run smoothly & the graphics look terrible. I don't understand why because it used to be fine (I'm half way through it) but now it isn't.

637331 2008-02-07 04:56:00 It may be because your card is running in directx9 (Geforce 5200+dx9 = bad performance)

Enable the game console in the option menu, keyboard tab.

Press ` and type mat_dx 80. The game will now be rendered in directx8.

You should be able to turn alot of the settings up and not lose too much performance =)

637332 2008-02-07 08:18:00 That's a great idea - I'll give it a try. I have updated direct-x to v9.

Thanks heaps

Cheers
