637303 2008-02-04 05:03:00 Do these exist now? I recall reading about this somewhere about a year ago, that video encoders would be part of mobos and would offer faster encoding than using a graphics card. If they are available I wonder if they are in fact much better. Strommer (42)
637304 2008-02-04 05:31:00 AFAIK graphics card only decode.

Haven't heard of any video encoders being built into motherboards.
Have only seen seperate cards for doing hardware video encoding to MPEG2.
You may be able to get cards that do other video formats, like MPEG4, now.

637305 2008-02-04 07:22:00 encoders are either software or hardware as in grahics chips, not really anything to do with the motherboard unless its on-board. SolMiester (139)
637306 2008-02-04 07:44:00 Thanks guys. Sol - yes I realize that but thought I heard that encoders were due to be part of the mobo itself or maybe it was in graphic cards (rather than using software as I do now). Strommer (42)
637307 2008-02-04 13:20:00 I know that with ATI's Avivo they're trying to get it to do hardware-based encoding but so far its ONLY software (Regardless of the video card):
ati.amd.com

See here for current hardware-based solutions:
en.wikipedia.org are_implementations

As of yet though, only DECODING is supported by ATI's Avivo and nVidia's PureVideo!

637308 2008-02-04 19:16:00 Software encoding is superiur anyway.

A hardware encoder is locked into one format with one quality setting, with software your choices of format and ability to configure are endless. And with todays PC's having so much grunt avaulable for so little coin you can easily match and beat the speed of a dedicated hardware encoder.
