I'm running Intel core 2 Duo t7500 on my laptop at 2.2ghz.

I use CPU-Z and I noticed that when I'm just casually on the internet or listening to music etc my CPU speed changes.

I might be in the internet and it will be runnign at about 1200mhz

Then it willl randomly go to about 1600mhz then to nearly 2200mhz then back to 1200 mhz.

Is this normal. Generally I don't open up a new programme or anything.

When it gets up to 2200mhz its FSB is nearly 800 and the muliplier is 11.0. But at 1200mhz the FSB is nearly 800 and the multiplier is 6.0


Also, is it normal for the cpu to run under the total clock rate.

Eg mine is 2.2ghz, is it normal for it to run at 1.2ghz? If it runs at max 2.2ghz will that make the CPU faster or slower?

636469 2008-02-02 02:51:00 A lot of laptops can change their clock speeds depending on the usage in order to save power. If you go to Power Options and then Advanced you can check it out there.

Its just a setting which you can change to like: run full speed all the time or 50% atleast on Vista. 		beeswax34 (63)

It will automatically adjust CPU speed depending on what it is doing.

So more or less, on a PC the CPU will run a full speed?

Also, in task manager it says that I have:


3069mb total physical memory
2128mb is cached
23mb is free

1.19gb is currently being used (Vista???)

I was reading something a bit before about about if there is no free phsical memory then instead of storing the data in RAM it stores it on the HDD and thus makes vista go slow becasue of the time it takes to access the HDD as opposed to the cache.

how is that 23 mb of free physical memory actually used? 		zac13x4 (12783)
636472 2008-02-02 03:08:00 AMD have also had that feature for a while now, called "cool and quiet" where the speed of the CPU is lowered if you're not doing much with it

Same thing with Intel but it's called something else (speedstep?)

Either way, perfectly normal as the others said

636473 2008-02-02 07:55:00 It is reasonably normal for vista to use that much memory my system uses between 700MB and 1.2Gb when not doing much at all. This can be reduced by keeping the number of programs running in the task bar to a minimum as well as closing the windows sidebar. Windows will definetly use virtual memory if it runs out of physical ram but if you have at least 2Gb you won't need to worry about that much. As far as the CPU goes it is called Intel Speed Step or EIST and can be enabled or disabled in the bios but in a laptop if it definetly a good thing to save battery, just browsing the net 1.2Ghz clock speed is fine and wont cause any slow downs and the speed automatically adjusts if it needs more power. This is a feature on all new intel core 2 duo and quad cpus for desktops and laptops hazza87 (12499)
