312595 2005-01-09 21:59:00 There is a PC auction at Turners, Seaview, on 19th January. The full catalogue is not up yet, but from what is listed , there will be heaps of cheap 17" monitors and Compaq Deskpro Pentium IIIs from 667MHz to 1 GHz.

Look here (www.turners.co.nz)

No, this is not advertising, and I have nothing to do with Turners, just for your info :p

312598 2005-01-10 11:11:00 Nothing remarkable.. they have them once a fortnight... Most of the time they're ex-corporate, so there's plenty of sensitive business secrets to be found, heaven forbid these companies have their IT guys at least zero fill the drives a few times before completely decommissioning them

Ideally the drives would be removed, drilled and then given to a smallbore rifle club for target practice, but I digress.

17" monitors go for 20 bucks, 19" and 21" monitors I've seen go for 40-50...

Colour laserjet printers for 350 bucks (usually the same two asian CAD/graphics students get into a bidding war over them) Black and white laser printers can go for as low as 20 bucks, I got a pair of laserjet 2100's for 160 bucks. I also got 3x 24 port 10/100 rack switches for 60 bucks (where they were retailing for 330 a piece at the time)

Those complete rigs will go for anywhere between 120 and 180 depending on their specs and rarity... if there's say one pc out of 20 that has two or three times the hdd space, it'll go up and up.

Laptops go for as low as 200, I picked up my one there for just a bit over 400 - a compaq armada 110. Sensitive company secrets and all, and a few personal items too ;)

When you go there, be sure to familiarise yourself with the regulars, they sit together and their sole purpose for being there is to mooch all the good stuff and sell it on tardme for profit. You get the gist of what they're interested in and you may just enter a few bidding wars with them before you learn when and when not to bother.

Have fun, and I may see you there some time ;)

312600 2005-01-10 20:08:00 Damn I wish they had those auctions down here, I need a second comp

last time I was in a store down here they wanted 40 - 50 dollars for a buggered looking 14 inch monitor and about $150 for a p266

I don't supose anyone would buy me one for a late Xmas present

312601 2005-01-10 20:17:00 thats right nigel, everything is insanely expensive down here when it comes to pc gear, the pc shops are a rip, you might as well go to harvey norman or dse if you need pc gear but thats for new stuff. for older stuff cash converters occassionaly have something... 312602 2005-01-10 22:52:00 With these auctions it is buyer beware. Everything is usually put up on an as-is basis, and the bidders are assumed to have satified themselves as to the condition of the goods.

Also beware of boxes of stuff like motherboards, hard drives, cdroms, etc. Most likely these are duff-stuff put in by local PC dealers who are having a clear out. They will have come from faulty computers most of the time, the ethics of this bothers me a little, as the vendors know the stuff doesnt work, so not only are they saving themselves tip fees, but are getting paid for it too :D

The same dealers also salt in non working monitors from time to time. So the moral is test everything you may want to bid on during the viewing day.

As Whetu says, there will be quite a number there who will be buying to re-sell, so they will have set themselves a top limit to go up to.

If you only want one or two items, and you have satisfied yourself of the quality, then if there isnt anyone else with the same mind, you can outbid the dealers to get what you want. Ok, you will pay a bit more, but less than the Trademe or corner shop second hand price.

Sometimes prices are very low, other times people just go mad. It's the luck of the draw on the day.

I wont be there, have something else to do that day, but I'll probably go and have a view the morning before.

The Compaq monitors Turners have been auctioning over the last year from corporates, IRD, ACC, etc especially the S700 models have mostly been quite good, and good value.
I have 5 of them ;)

312603 2005-01-11 01:52:00 If I were there (which I wont be), I certainly wouldnt bother bidding for anything with less than a 20GB HDD. The other thing to be aware of is that these machines are likely to be slimline boxes without a CD drive and may be difficult to upgrade components .... if they are anything like the computers my work place had replaced, they were merely slaves driven off a network.

However, if you are looking to have slaves off a network, then they may be OK for that purpose.
