636996 2008-02-05 10:29:00 Diverting the conversation a little - early this morning, after doing a little searching, I managed to download Vista SP1 RTM from winvistaforums.com
It was 400 meg roughly, not the 65 meg version discussed in other forums.

I'm fairly certain this copy is legitimate RTM as my Vista version is now listed as Vista with service pack one without any version number after it (as occured with various beta rc versions).

Additionally I've done all the usual virus, spyware checks etc and it comes up clean.
Interesting I tried the link again tonight and it seems to have been taken down. Maybe micro$oft had something to do with this given they intend to embargo SP1 till March sometime.

Its 65MB or so when downloaded through Windows Update legally and then it downloads the rest. You obviously got the whole 400MB package whole thats why it was so big.

636997 2008-02-05 20:50:00 think I'll wait for the actual SP 1 from MS - minus the driver bugs that they should have fixed .

LOVE the Disclaimer on that site.---

636998 2008-02-05 20:59:00 Some sites say its RC refresh 2. Which doesnt show the build number either.

Its not RTM / Final.

"One of the big features discussed in early speculation of Windows Vista SP1 was the kernel upgrade, which was supposed to bring the operating system into line with the Longhorn kernel used in Windows Server 2008. With Vista SP1 going RTM, there hasn't been so much as a peep from Microsoft about the mooted kernel update. Has it happened? Well the answer is yes it has. Presumably the main reason for Microsoft's silence on the subject is that as they're keen to promote the improvements and enhancements to Vista, rather than placing emphasis on a kernel upgrade, which some people might see as a risk of newly-introduced instability."

637002 2008-02-06 01:09:00 All I went is some increase in speed and Vista being able to calculate "Time Remaining" more accurately. Otherwise Vista is an absolute dream.

Go Obama!

637003 2008-02-06 04:51:00 Just checked the link again and the download is working again. whallenich (12311)
637004 2008-02-06 19:11:00 Inspecs 3.0 (@www.powerleap.com) reports that my version of Vista is Ultimate Edition Service Pack 1 (Build 6001) - when I ran this programme with RC2 installed it correctly reported that I had an RC version.
I'm unsure if this is concrete evidence that the d/l I referred to in my first post is SP1 RTM. Does anyone know of any other way to test whether the download IS SP1 RTM?

637005 2008-02-06 20:14:00 As far as i've seen, the build that you downloaded is the real-deal and will be the same one released to the public next month.

I'm hanging out for XP SP3 though. Not sure I really need any of the fixes in it, but it's supposed to speed things up a little :)
