637514 2008-02-04 23:59:00 Hi Guys and Gals

I have an issue where my XPPr SP2 PC is using 100% of the CPU while supposedly sitting idle
Task Manage shows no applications in use but 70 processes running.
The offending process would seem to be "wmiprvse.exe"
The system will allow me to select this process but not allow me to stop it .
Strangely, there is also another call "spoolsv.exe" that is also running towards the top of the "CPU usage" list.
If I stop this process, I can then stop the "wmiprvse.exe" service and then CPU usage drops down to 1-3% as I would expect
If I leave the pc to its own devices, both "wmiprvse.exe" and "spoolsv.exe" kick back into life and CPU usage ramps up towards 100%.
I am runnin AVG Pro 7.5, I have run Adaware 2007, Spybot, CC Cleaner and Rogue Remover with no threats found.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers
HH

637516 2008-02-05 00:38:00 Lets have a look at whats running, download HijackThis (dw.com.com de26) << Thats a direct download, save it to a folder, run it, and select save a log file, post back the complete log here.

Both process's you mention - wmiprvse.exe and spoolsv.exe arealso a known virus, that some Antivirus programs wont detect. BUT they are also a actual windows Process as well.

Try running spyware doc from my sig as well as Super Antispyware (www.superantispyware.com/). I'd also suggest running a better AV - Nod32 is better.30 Day free Trial direct download (http:).

Thanks for the replies

The print jobs jogged my memory and when looking at the list of printers available, sure enough, my old disconnected (2 months ago) multiifunction printer had 4 system generated print jobs. I have deleted the print jobs and removed the printer and all seems to be well.
I have seen this before with a corrupted driver on a customers PC, but for reasons I can only attribute to old age, I never thought of this for my own PC.
I was looking for something much more technical or catastrophic.

Thanks again
HH
