637449 2008-02-04 22:12:00 My flatmate's daughter has had a problem getting music cd's she recorded on her mum's com to play on hers. They used to play but those that that she recorded in the past 2 months won't.Tends to freeze the com.Mum's running an AsRock K7S41GX; 1.6GHz Duron; 512MB DDR2; LG CDRW-GCE-8527B.The daughter has an HP Pavilion 6615; K6 550MHz; 384MB SDRAM; Asus CRW-5232A3.
I fitted the Asus to the daughter's com and the cd's did then play.
However, the cd that daughter made yesterday using my com didn't register as was the case before.Me having more patience,I waited about 3minutes and the tracks eventually showed themselves.
Imported them to iTunes really slowly.40-50 minutes do load 64MB.

Any ideas as to what may be the causes to this snag most welcome.
We all have XP Pro SP2,validated,updated.
UDMA 5 on all the coms
I have lodged this thread & cannot reply immediately as have gone out.

637450 2008-02-05 01:12:00 Changed brands of CDs at all?

Were the CDs finalized?
wratterus (105)
637451 2008-02-05 21:06:00 Thay had used both SKC & TDK CD-R.I used Verbatim CD-R.The cd's were burnt & then imported using iTunes & were finalised.
Before reinstalling XP Pro to daughter's HP Pavilion I saw a referrence on the screen in BIOS that the computer is not ACPI compatible. But that was with the OS that was installed already, which was XP Pro but that seemed to be problematic & sticky. That's why I installed all again.
It may be a glitch that she has to put up with.
Thanks for your advice,wratterus

637452 2008-02-05 21:49:00 Is iTunes installed as the default audio player on the other PCs? Possibly the CD was burnt in a 'data' type, the songs are still .m4a and windows media player (or almost any other media player) on the other PCs isn't liking it? And maybe the reason it changed suddenly from working to not working was cause of iTunes update that came out a few months ago, maybe it changed some things? A real real long shot there!

ACPI shouldn't make any difference, I'd avoid SKC though. Crappy brand.

In all honesty the best CDs I've seen for music are those pink transonic ones you can get from the warehouse. You can give them an absolute bollocking and they still play fine. Verbatim is a good brand too. :o

I generally buy Princo CDs by the 100 (spindle). They also seem to be good, for $20 you can't complain.

637453 2008-02-05 21:55:00 footnote: re ACPI compatibility with the HP Pavilion.I believe that ACPI is concerned with OS's.Perhaps the Pavilion can't run XP Pro efficiently.
I have Win98 and a spare 20GB HDD @ hand and may give that a spin in her com.
As usual,I do things the long way.Elimination by trial & error.

637454 2008-02-05 21:58:00 Either way, ACPI won't muck around with your music.

Has the XP Pro installation got SP2 on it?
wratterus (105)
637455 2008-02-05 23:03:00 Yep,SP2 on all 3 comp's.Thanks the advice about ACPI.I didn't think it mattered with this situation.
The problem daughter had did start around the time you mention the change in iTunes.I loaded iTunes 7 to all the computers recently.Maybe I'll roll-back to version 6
What u say about the mp4 format.Daughter said couple days back that the music she was getting from Limewire(Pro) was not music but video versions.I checked to make sure that she was picking mp3 and she was.
However.I did note @ that time that the format on her cd's was mp4. She did get mp3 when she used my com.
SKC not the best as you say.Mum usually gets TDK Gold, guess she got the SKC as daughter nearly goes through as many cd's as she does texts per month!!(2000 texts in 9 days??!!)
cheers for your help. I'll try the rollback to iTunes 6.
Cd's made on mum & my com no hassle with recognition.
