312635 2005-01-09 23:12:00 I see in this morning's Herald that BG is considered a "mega-donor" in the world of charitable works.

From his personal fortune (not from Microsoft's coffers) he has endowed his charitable Foundation with $NZ38 Billion (that's $38,000,000,000 folks, not chicken feed in anybody's language).

I might have interpreted the information incorrectly, but it appears as though the Foundation made grants exceeding $1,923,500,000 last year.

There's a brownie point or two hidden in amongst that lot for sure.

Cheers

312636 2005-01-10 00:18:00 If I won even 1 million dollars, I would feel on top of the world and would live happily ever after .

I hope the ones that have worked really hard to get up there, never lose that passion for achieving their dreams . You often hear people like this who when looking back - say it was the journey there that they enjoyed more than when they did reach the top .

And don't laugh, but I wonder if any Billy Gates [or to keep the ff boys happy]another Ben Googer, ?sp, are going to emerge from talented young folk we've got here on the PC World Forums .

Well that's all folks . Will ramble off and find someone else to bore . Maybe my mother cat will finally have her kittens . Must be close - keeps hopping up on my bed thinking that she's going to have this lot on my bed as well . Fat chance!

312637 2005-01-10 00:28:00 Whats more is when Bill Gates plans to retire in 20 or so years, he has gone on record as saying he will leave his children with 20 million each, and donate 95% of his Microsoft stock to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

Brownie Points indeed.....

Almost makes me want to use Windows

Gates is one of THE richest men it the WORLD he can afford it, its a good tax write off.

Michale Schumaker by gates'es standard a poor F1 driver with a short earning cycle gave $10-000-000.00 US to Tusnami aid Thialand.

Thats more than some countrys have pleged to the UN.

Schumakers closest personall security assistant was also killed in Thailand unfortunatly.

Was not the turn of the century quoted figure of Gates'es worth 450 Billion $ US. It HAS gone up since then

1.93 billion is less than HALF of 1% of his totall worth on year 2000 figures. 38 billion is less than 8.5% of his totall worth on year 2000 figures.

Consider that in relativity to the alleged donation sum.

Today Bill is a figurhead of a corporate, his personall power, and definately his personall responsobility for everythig Micro$oft do, is very over stated.

What everyone forgets here is that if it dosent go into trusts now, when he dies it will all be taken buy the IRS, 20 years on .

His children will still have controll of, and be major benneaficaries of, his foundation . The same as the kennedy deal, and so many other recripicating charities .

The Yearly income is partiall disbursed, the capitall sum continues to grow, and the decendants dont have to do anything if they dont want to, for generation's . Unless a situation like the McDonaldas occours where there are no living decendants .

Which is why the McDonalds have given soo much recently, so that when they are both dead the IRS will get very little, and the trust will be almost empty, so it can not be hijacked and abused after they are dead .

You might want to research your figures. At the turn of the century he had an estimated net worth of around $45b, so $38b is around 75% of his net worth, not less than half of 1 percent :)

312643 2005-01-10 07:43:00 drb1 if you take your net worth and multiply it by 8.5%, have you donated that much to charity? Whether you earn $30k a year or $30mil an 8.5% donation is still not to be sneezed at. Sb0h (3744)
312644 2005-01-10 09:46:00 Well, at the moment that's the equvalent of me donating around $8.50. Less than an automatic 0900 world vision donation.

Of course, if Mike is right, then it is a large donation he is making.
